A guide to getting Diablo 2 to run in Virtualbox and also have a decent save system and no respawning
The way to avoid respawning and have actual savegames in Diablo2 is to have only one character you're playing, run the game within Virtualbox, and also use the Virtualbox 'Save machine state' system to save the entire state of the system, rather than reloading a game in Diablo2.
This works with the latest version of the Diablo2 installer, please don't ask me whether it works with any mods because I don't know. The only mod I can guarantee it doesn't work with is the 3Dfx/Glide one - that one will run in virtualbox, but it'll crash the machine if you try to save the machine state while the game is running. It isn't possible to run Diablo2 in fullscreen without the 3Dfx mod inside virtualbox, but the workaround I've found below works and is unobtrusive - you barely notice the non-diablo interface.
So without further ado:
- Turn on Virtualization support for your CPU in your computer's BIOS/UEFI. A guide is here:
- If you're running Win10, follow the instructions here for uninstalling Hyper-V:
- Download the older version of Virtualbox from here:
and the extension pack here:
Later versions won't work.
Install Virtualbox with default options, restart, then double-click on the extension pack to install it.
- Run virtualbox. Create a new virtual machine using a Windows XP CD.
- Once WinXP is installed in the virtual machine, run msconfig in XP and set it to boot into safe mode. A guide to do so is here:
Then in the virtual machine window, click on the 'Devices' menu and click on 'Insert Guest Additions CD image...".
- Shut down XP by clicking on the start menu and going to Turn off Computer->Restart. Once restarted into safe mode, open file explorer and go to the Guest Additions 'CD'. Run VboxWindowsAdditions-x86 and run through the install process, making sure support for Direct3D is ticked.
- Once finished, run msconfig again and turn off safe mode. Shut down XP. Once shut down, right-click the virtual machine and go to settings. Under the General->Advanced settings, make sure shared clipboard is bidirectional (that'll make it easy to copy the diablo 2 serial code from your real OS). Then go to display settings, make video memory 128MB and make sure 3D acceleration is ticked. Click okay and run the virtual machine again.
- Once booted, go to the virtual machine 'Device' menu again, then 'Shared folder settings', and set up a shared folder on your real OS. Go back to your real OS and put the diablo 2 installer file in that folder. Go back to XP and open file explorer, that shared folder will now be visible as "(Name you specified) on 'vboxsrv'". Go there and run the diablo 2 installer through to completion.
- Click on the 'View' menu in the virtual machine and make sure 'Auto-resize guest display' is ticked. Then hit the right CTRL button on your keyboard and the 'f' button at the same time - this will put the virtual machine in fullscreen (hit it again if you need to go out of fullscreen). The XP screen resolution should adjust accordingly. Now right-click on the taskbar, go to properties and tick 'Auto-hide the taskbar', click ok.
- Right-click the desktop, go to Themes tab and change theme to 'Windows Classic'. Then go to Appearance tab and click 'advanced' button. Select 'Active title bar' from drop-down box and set both colours to black. Click okay, then click okay again to get back to the desktop.
- Make a copy of the Diablo 2 launcher shortcut, right-click on it, go to properties, and add '-w -nofixaspect' (without quote marks) to the end of the target field, eg. "C:\Program Files\Diablo II\Diablo II.exe" -w -nofixaspect
- Double-click the shortcut. Diablo 2 should start without issue, in a window. Click on the maximise button of the window to make it go fullscreen. Now the only visible aspect of the OS should be the title bar and that will be mostly black and not distracting. Done!
- Play your game. If at any time you want to save/quit out of the game, simply move the mouse down to the bottom-center of the screen and the virtualbox menu will pop up. Click on the 'X' button on the right and a dialog will pop up asking you what kind of Quit you want to do. Use the default option which is 'Save the Machine State' and click Okay. This will save the current state of the OS including the game. If for any reason the virtualbox menu doesn't pop up at the bottom, hit right-CTRL + F to pop the virtual machine out of fullscreen mode, then click the "x" close button in the top right-hand corner - the same Quit dialog will come up.
- The next time you want to play diablo2, just run virtualbox and double-click on your virtual machine. The game will be restored to exactly where you left off last time with no alterations. Hence, a Real save state in the area which you finished in- and no respawning.

Cannot run Minecraft 1.12.2 from Eclipse
So, after getting Eclipse running, I imported the Gradle workspace I downloaded (the Forge MDK), and ran the "fg_runs/genEclipseRuns" and "ide/eclipse" tasks. I made sure the Minecraft version and the proper JRE was set. The game should run, right? Even with just the basic "Example Mod" that's shipped? Nope.
This is my JRE setting for the client
Below is the crash I get every single time.
Can someone tell me how the hell 1.12.2 development works in 2020? Google has so far proven useless! Yes, I will eventually branch out into working on stuff for more "modern" versions of the game, but 1.12.2 is the largest install base at the moment, and I will not be ditching it until the last possible second.
