In my studies and reading, it seems like the major labels are still going under and the indie labels are taking over... But we still can't monetize music sales like we used to. Like some artists, I sort of have a love/hate relationship with Spotify (is it any coincidence that its creator, Daniel Elk, also founded UTorrent?). Some journalists are keen to blame labels for wholesaling their catalogs to services like Spotify and Pandora for so cheap compared to the sales model (still beats illegal downloads) but in Pandora's case, they're just trying to create another legal curation service and literally can't afford to play out on the number of plays from their user base.
With the Future of Music Coalition, we've seen the rise of the brand amongst artists. Country acts with big whiskey logo backdrops on their stages, Beiber and Calvin Klein, etc. but for those who don't want a deal with Pepsi (like Immortal Technique if you get the reference), will there any viable revenue streams other than touring and merch?
According to the engineer, no one in the corporate publishing/licensing side are even musicians themselves anymore and they're all pushing numbers and statistics. A lot of people I talk to say the industry as a whole is not unlike the film industry who are stuck on reboots and marvel films. We've seen a rise of multimillion dollar law suits regarding plagiarism in our latest crop of pop acts (yeah, pop emulates itself more than any other genre but I'm talking deliberate and obvious plagiarism) and as some have noted, a greater preference/importance placed on image than talent.
So where do you see the future headed? For the labels, the artists, corporate side, and for a soon-to-be B.S. Music Production who wants to work his way up to producer someday and will be lucky to find an unpaid internship at a studio after this one (and likely sleep on the curb for two years hoping he's considered for a cable runner position)?
