Deep (Learning) Dive: Visualizing How NBA Subreddits Reacted to Bubble Seeding Games

TL;DR: check out pretty interactive graphs showing how happy or sad NBA fans are.
Those of you who frequent NBA team subreddits are no doubt familiar with the usual rollercoaster reactions accompanying wins, losses, injuries, bad calls, twitter spats, etc. Some of these reactions, obviously, are stronger than others, while some may defy the norm (e.g. morale increases after a loss due to lottery position). But what if we could visualize those subjective ups and downs in one place, abetted by Charles Barkley's career rival -- the line graph.
With a troubling amount of free time from the pandemic, that's what I set out to do.
With the help of natural language processing, deep learning, and an overworked MacBook air, I've plotted the jubilance and despair of the 22 bubble teams throughout these Disneyland festivities. The technique in question here is Sentiment Analysis, the art of algorithmically judging whether a piece of text is positive, neutral, or negative. Like the US in Foreign Policy, I don't believe in neutrality, so The Algorithm squeezes everything into Positive and Negative buckets, with those deemed more definitively Positive/Negative receiving a higher score in that direction. Take the following examples:
The NBA and ESPN cannot foul out Giannis. The fix is in.
  • Verdict: The speakers is expressing Negativity (high sodium content). Score = -2.4
I’m chill with a minutes restriction. But 15 minutes?!? Ridiculous. I don’t even think that’s a good idea medically speaking, unless he’s on a bike during all his extended breaks.
  • Verdict: The speaker has mixed feelings, but probably feels overall Negative. Score = -0.45
Don’t mind me, just here for the salt.
  • I don't have the context available, but the speaker is probably retelling a positive experience at Golden Corral. Positive. Score = +0.76
Thank you! It’s in my Tinder bio now, I’m so proud of it!
  • Lakers fan est. Jul 1, 2018. Positive. Score = +4.1
Sentiment Graphs
With these definitions in mind, take a look at what The Algorithm spits out for /ripcity:
Blazers Graph
Predictably, lots of highs and lows, some of them nonsensical. Here's an interactive version of the graph.
And the results for /memphisgrizzlies:
Grizzlies Graph
Sadness, hope, and acceptance. Interactive version.
For the last example, check out /heat:
Heat Graph
As a fanbase, they reacted quite reliably to wins and losses (interactive version). You can check out all 30 (including non-bubble teams') graphs from the bubble period at the NBA sentiment home page.
But we've gone a long time on this self post without generating an arbitrary ranking, haven't we?
Vicarious Victors
For our first ranking, let's see which teams reacted most positively to wins. For each win, we define "pre_win" sentiment as the average sentiment in the 12-hour window before the start of that game, while "post_win" refers to the average sentiment over the 12 hours after. "win_delta" is the metric of focus, the change in sentiment from pre- to post-game.
team wins pre_win post_win win_delta

SAS 5 0.443 0.337 -0.106
ORL 3 0.304 0.132 -0.171
Observe that 18/22 teams improved in sentiment after wins. Orlando and San Antonio both had major injuries occur during wins, which could explain their status as negative outliers.
Losers' Lament
As with the winner's table, we can compare "pre_loss" and "post_loss" sentiment, also with 12 hour windows, to get "loss_delta", which we expect to be negative on average.

The Raptors only had 1 loss, but it was by 20 points to the division-rival Celtics, hence the steep drop. Orlando continues to buck the trend but I have no explanation ready this time. However, there is a general trend that teams with lower expectations don't react as poorly to losses.
Putting It All Together
Which teams have been most reactive? Let's get the different in "win_delta" and "loss_delta", weighted by number of games won/lost, to get "win_loss_delta":
team wins win_delta losses loss_delta win_loss_delta
HOU 4 0.144 4 -0.239 0.192

ORL 3 -0.171 5 0.151 -0.159
Fittingly winning the title of Most Reactive, we have the Houston Rockets. Orlando finishes with the best Reaction Draft lottery odds and will hope to secure the services of top prospect Skip Bayless.
In terms of overall trends, my guess was that the most bandwagon-friendly teams would be most reactive. That seems true to an extent, but the effect is mostly from lower-tier teams other than the Wizards reacting based on lower expectations.
Keep in mind the sample sizes here are small, which will obviously cause some extra variation. I'm working on incorporating The Algorithm into the playoffs and seeing results from a full (fingers crossed) season next year, but the early returns from the all-knowing machine are promising.

Mythic Odysseys of Theros:
The Cosmogony (Page 35) [a poem by an unnamed Meletian sage that includes several (sometimes conflicting) tales of the creation of the world and beyond.]
The Origin of Monsters (Page 35) [notable as an attempt to find commonality in a number of different tales about the birth of dragons. It also describes how Pharika hid secrets in the blood of basilisks, how the spirits of great warriors are reincarnated in the form of manticores, and dozens of other tales.]
The Theriad (Epic Poem) (Page 35) [describes the exploits of various champions of Heliod, all of whom are simply called "the Champion," as if they were a single individual. Because the identities of the heroes aren't mentioned, the tales have more to say about the character of Heliod than about any champion's mortal deeds.]
The Callapheia (Page 35) [ is about the exploits of a single mortal hero, Callaphe the Mariner, who snuck into Mount Velus and stole Purphoros's tears, hid behind Phenax and wrote down his secrets, and raced Thassa at the edge of the world before sailing into Nyx. Also serves as something of a gazetteer of Theros, describing its various lands and their inhabitants, at least as they existed some centuries ago.]

Book List for Tomes in Candlekeep

Other things of note:
Monsters that can hide in books:
Allip (MToF, Page 115) ["Insidious Lore" allows this cursed knowledge to turn any creature that reads it into an Allip. Once a new book containing this secret has been made the Allip disapears, but original book that created it remains. It is also more than likely that the creator of this new book is unaware that this cursed information is now inside it. This means that these cursed texts are self-replicating. Where there's one more book in library, there's probably dozens more.]
Swarm of Books (Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, Page 156) (Creature. Made of 30 books) (Duhlark's Private Library) [Not a construct? Which means these books are living creatures that can probably bleed. Weird.]
Paper Bird (Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, Page 191) [This magic item turns into an origami bird construct when activated that can only be unfolded by the intended recipient. A book full of this paper would be worth a lot of money.]
