BYOND development news 11/13/20

By now most of you have probably heard that our beloved corporate liaison, Richard B. Long, has passed. It seems he was struggling with a medical condition for some time in secret, which was exacerbated by his recent bout of food poisoning, and therefore went to see his family doctor off-station who relayed this tragic news back to us. Since I am at a loss for words, I'll leave it to his best friend, senior records manager Gus Lemmon, to say a few:
Goodbyes are always hard, but none are harder than for my friend and yours, Richard Long. In his literally incredible life he touched so many, so deeply, it's hard to imagine anyone will ever measure up to his legend. Richard left a bit of himself everywhere he went, and was a muse to artists, poets, and genre fiction authors. A lover of nature, Richard enjoyed spelunking and motorboating. And of course, we all know of his surpassing fondness for cats of all kinds. Even though our time with him was short, his warmth and vigor of spirit will live on in our hearts. For in one way or another, Richard Long enriched all of our lives; I say with pride that he has greatly enriched mine.
On Space Station 13 we've had our share of losses—some would say more than our share—but this leaves a deeper hole than most. A small memorial service will be held tomorrow at 1600 in the chapel. In respect for our grief, corporate has pushed back the upcoming audit for two weeks.
  • The entire week was consumed by working on texture atlases in BYOND 514. This was a much, much trickier project than I thought and threw me a bunch of curve balls.
  • I was going to look into a crash reported on an SS13 server, but it appears to have been an out-of-memory issue after all. Although I don't have near-term plans to go 64-bit (that'd be nice, though), I would still like to look into ways of improving memory usage in general and specifically improving memory freeing. A lot of reboot time between rounds is just clearing out the massive associative lists used in the game.
  • I was asked this week if the new particles in BYOND 514 could do fire. I think they could do it rather well, but it'll take trial and error to find the right parameters and combination of filters to make it work. Thought exercise: If you had to use particles to handle fire, what would you do? I know the specific syntax isn't really available to you yet, but in a perfect world how would you solve this problem? Your answer could help shape parts of the particle system that aren't finalized.
  • If you've never had a scope put up your nose and down your throat, you've missed out on one of the great unpleasant experiences in life. If that type of scope isn't in the medlab already, get your devs to add it.
  • Thanks everyone who's helping support BYOND through Membership and our donation channels!
The usual full development news is where it always is, and today's early-access Patreon post goes into the structural side of the texture atlas and project and how object-oriented programming can sometimes go overboard trying to keep things in their own space. The weather's colder now and we already have Christmas-themed commercials on TV, so the season is coming, but boy is Black Friday gonna be weird this year. Keep safe and keep warm.

10 Takeaways from last week and other observations - The Athletic

As the Giants head into their bye, here’s a final review of Sunday’s 27-17 win over the Eagles:
1. The Eagles apparently didn’t get the memo that James Bradberry is playing like one of the top cornerbacks in the league. Philadelphia targeted Bradberry multiple times in big spots on Sunday and, as has been the case all season, the Giants corner was up to the task.
Bradberry was targeted eight times on Sunday and he allowed just two completions for 15 yards. He broke up two passes to increase his season total to 14, which is tied for the league lead.
Bradberry’s first pass break-up came on third-and-3 on the Eagles’ first possession. He expertly navigated a rub route and broke on a late slant pass from Carson Wentz to Jalen Reagor, forcing the Eagles to settle for a field goal.
Wentz again targeted Bradberry in a crucial moment, trying to hit Reagor on a back-shoulder fade on fourth-and-10 from the Giants’ 36-yard line with under five minutes remaining. Bradberry had blanket coverage and then played the ball through Reagor’s hands, sending it harmlessly to the turf. The Giants led by a touchdown at the time and kicked a field goal on the ensuing possession to seal the win.
The break-up on the second pass to Reagor perfectly displayed Bradberry’s best traits. A rare understated No. 1 cornerback, Bradberry’s personality translates to the field. He’s remarkably calm when the ball is in the air, trusting his technique rather than panicking and committing a penalty or losing track of the ball.
Having watched Bradberry for 10 weeks, it’s hard to fathom how the Panthers could watch him for four seasons and just let him walk in free agency. A 27-year-old, low-maintenance player at a premium position is exactly where teams should invest. But the Panthers didn’t use the franchise tag or make any efforts to re-sign Bradberry, allowing him to reunite with Dave Gettleman in New York. Gettleman, who drafted Bradberry in the second round of the 2016 draft while in Carolina, gave Bradberry a three-year, $43.5 million contract that looks like a bargain.
2. The Giants announced that kicker Graham Gano will be placed on the COVID-19 reserve list on Tuesday. Gano tested positive for the virus on Monday.
Players were given the day off on Monday after the win over the Eagles. Two staff members (not players or coaches) were identified as close contacts with Gano and instructed to stay home on Tuesday. The team facility remained open on Tuesday, but meetings with players were held remotely.
The Giants are on their bye, so there’s a chance that Gano, if he’s asymptomatic, could be activated from the reserve list for their Week 12 game against the Bengals. The Giants promoted kicker Ryan Santoso from the practice squad as an insurance policy. The 25-year-old Santoso handled 17 kickoffs in three games for the Titans last season. He’s never attempted a field goal in an NFL game.
Gano is 21 for 22 on field goals this season and has made 20 straight. The 33-year-old signed a three-year extension Sunday with $14 million in new money and $9.5 million guaranteed.
Gano is the second Giants player to test positive for COVID-19 this season. Left guard Will Hernandez missed two games after testing positive on Oct. 28.
3. Defensive lineman Leonard Williams had another active day, recording seven pressures and five quarterback hits. Williams’ 16 quarterback hits through 10 games matches his total from 15 games last season.
Two factors separate Williams from the Giants’ other quality defensive linemen, Dexter Lawrence and Dalvin Tomlinson. Williams plays 73 percent of the defensive snaps (Tomlinson plays 62 percent and Lawrence plays 59 percent) and he has the versatility to move around the line.
Williams’ versatility feeds into coordinator Patrick Graham’s creativity, as the 6-foot-5, 302-pounder lines up in a variety of spots. And the Giants are using Williams more in stunts, which allow him to get into the backfield through his combination of strength and athleticism.
4. Quarterback Daniel Jones’ inaccuracy downfield in the Giants’ 25-23 loss to the Buccaneers in Week 8 was uncharacteristic. Jones has returned to form in the past two games.
Jones completed 2-of-6 passes for 49 yards on passes 20-plus yards downfield against the Bucs. He’s 5-for-5 for 171 yards on such passes in the past two games, including 3-for-3 for 105 yards against the Eagles.
Jones’ downfield success is why it was so maddening to watch coordinator Jason Garrett run an offense with so many short routes early in the season. Jones is at his best when he’s aggressive. That style can lead to turnovers, but, at least in the past two games, he has been clean in that regard.
I highlighted Jones’ aggression with two deep passes on a critical third-quarter drive and his late strike to Darius Slayton in my game recap. But there was another throw that stood out during my film review.
The Giants were backed up deep in their territory late in the first half, facing third-and-5 from their own 7-yard line. Jones diagnosed Philadelphia’s coverage before the snap and made an adjustment, sending running back Dion Lewis out wide to the left to join Sterling Shepard.
The Eagles were in a Cover-2 and Jones likely could have hit Shepard running a stick route at the first-down marker. But Jones made an aggressive throw to Lewis down the sideline in the hole behind the cornerback and in front of the safety for a 17-yard gain.
The pre-snap recognition, accurate throw and aggressive mindset where all positive signs in Jones’ development.
5. Garrett deservedly was criticized heavily for his unimaginative game plans early in the season. Now, he’s worthy of praise for making drastic improvements.
It clearly took Garrett time to get comfortable with how to devise game plans and call plays for an inconsistent young quarterback, shaky offensive line and underwhelming group of skill players. Adding Saquon Barkley’s season-ending knee injury to the mix in Week 2 exacerbated the problem.
But Garrett has found his groove. He’s walked a tight rope with Jones, trying to rein in the quarterback’s turnover issues while maintaining aggressiveness. And the offensive line has found a comfort zone running more power and counter plays that require pulling linemen.
Garrett has mixed in trick plays with varying degrees of success, but the creativity is welcomed. And his route combinations have been helping get receivers open and made decisions clearer for Jones.
6. Wayne Gallman is producing when given an opportunity. This is nothing new.
A fourth-round pick in 2017, Gallman averaged 4.3 yards per carry as a rookie while splitting carries with Orleans Darkwa. Gallman faded to the background in his second season after the Giants took Saquon Barkley with the No. 2 pick in the 2018 draft and Barkley exploded for 2,028 yards from scrimmage to win offensive rookie of the year.
Gallman briefly emerged from the shadows last season when Barkley suffered a high-ankle sprain in Week 3. Gallman had 118 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns starting in place of Barkley the next week. But Gallman suffered a concussion early in the Giants’ next game that sidelined him for a week.
Barkley was back by the time Gallman returned, and then the coaching staff oddly turned to veteran Buck Allen as the No. 2 back down the stretch. Gallman only had three carries after returning from his one-game absence and was a healthy scratch for the final four games of season. There were no signs that there was anything deeper to Gallman falling out of favor with the previous coaching staff than a desire to give Allen touches instead.
The new coaching staff didn’t hold Gallman in any higher regard, making him a healthy scratch in Week 2 and then signing veteran Devonta Freeman after Barkley’s injury. Within a week, Freeman was established as the No. 1 back, while Gallman played just four snaps and didn’t have a carry in a Week 6 win over Washington.
Freeman injured his ankle the next week against the Eagles and the coaching staff had no choice but to feature Gallman, although Alfred Morris has been part of a rotation. Gallman has averaged 3.7 yards per carry over the past four games, but he has run hard and scored five touchdowns.
Gallman should remain the No. 1 back for the rest of the season, even after Freeman returns from injured reserve in a few weeks. With Barkley due to reclaim the feature role next season, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Gallman, who is in the final year of his rookie contract, is looking for a fresh start elsewhere after getting overlooked repeatedly in New York. The next six games can serve as an extended audition for the 26-year-old.
7. Jones showed some ability as a runner in his rookie season, but many of his carries were scrambles. He’s become much more of a rushing threat with zone-reads becoming a staple of the offense this season.
Jones’ hold on the team’s rushing lead remains strong (384 yards to Gallman’s 275) and his legs will continue to be a valuable weapon this season. But it’s impossible not to consider the potential of the rushing attack with Jones running zone-reads with Barkley next season.
Teams will have to have to respect Jones’ ability to keep the ball, which will have one fewer defender crashing down on Barkley. Otherwise, as Jones has shown this season, he’ll burn defenses that fail to stay home on the edge.
8. Shepard has 26 catches for 219 yards and one touchdown in the four games since returning from a four-week absence due to turf toe. Those aren’t eye-popping stats, but Shepard has made an impact.
Half of his 26 catches have gone for first downs. His ability to move the chains makes a difference that doesn’t jump out in the box score.
Shepard made a 3-yard catch on third-and-2 in the first quarter that demonstrated his subtle value. The Giants don’t have another receiver who can create the type of separation Shepard did on his out route that gave Jones an easy throw for a first down.
9. It was always perplexing that the Giants gave tight end Levine Toilolo a two-year, $6.2 million contract with $3.2 million guaranteed. It was even more confusing when the Giants barely played Toilolo after giving him a rich deal for a No. 3 tight end.
Toilolo played 35 percent of the offensive snaps in the season opener when the Giants used a three-tight end package extensively against Pittsburgh’s ferocious front seven. But Toilolo played just 17 percent of the offensive snaps over the next six games. That trend has reversed, with Toilolo playing 30 percent of the snaps in the past three games.
Part of that is due to the Giants’ usage of 13 personnel (1 RB, 3 TE, 1 WR). They use the heavy package on 10 percent of their snaps, which is the second highest rate in the league. But the real uptick can be traced to using Toilolo more in two-tight end packages with Kaden Smith. Playing the 6-foot-8, 268-pound Toilolo in two-tight end sets gets another solid blocker on the field and removes a weak blocker (Evan Engram).
The benefits of presenting a run-heavy personnel grouping also helps the passing game. The Giants had a 22-yard completion to Slayton on their second play from scrimmage on a play-action pass from 21 personnel (2 RB, 1 TE, 2 WR). With fullback Eli Penny on the field and Toilolo at tight end instead of Engram, the Eagles likely were more inclined to bite on the play fake. The Giants were in 12 personnel (1 RB, 2 TE, 2 WR) with Smith and Toilolo on the 40-yard completion to Slayton late in the game off of play-action.
Penny played 11 snaps on Sunday after failing to play more than five offensive snaps in any of the first nine games. It’s clear that Judge wants to build a physical offense, especially as the weather worsens.
Three of the Giants’ final six games are at home and their three road trips are to Cincinnati, Seattle and Baltimore. Odds are those games will be played in ugly conditions and Judge wants a smash-mouth team that can handle the elements.
10. Even when the Giants got off to a miserable start, their stretch of five division games in a six-week span was always going to be a chance to salvage the season. They lost the first game of that stretch to Dallas to drop to 0-5, but they’ve gone 3-2 over the past five weeks with a pair of wins over Washington and Sunday’s victory over the Eagles.
The Giants are 3-2 in the NFC East with only a Week 17 rematch with the Cowboys remaining on the division slate. At worst, they’ll finish with a .500 record within the division. That’s a marked improvement for a team that went 4-14 against NFC East foes in the previous three seasons.
If the Giants beat Dallas in the season finale, they’ll have a winning division record for the first time since 2016. Before that, 2009 was the Giants’ last season with a winning record in the NFC East.
