Posted this on SOG. Also posting it here. The No Signal ARG. The one link between people getting these binary comments is that they recently commented on a SOG video.
The first video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zz_nG3vzuiI
The title reads: Welcome.
The description reads: work together or be greedy
There is a text document, but I can't seem to find where I originally found it, however, it was in my history: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1acuMSsCszH_tNwOf8T9M0AvUoLhScqD8/view?usp=sharing
These are a few of the comments that people received: Hi User, oUr, work together or be greedy, decentralized, only a few of you will login, now lets get started, welcome, next video will tell, only a few of you will understand, sometimes I have errors, calculating, player it seems you understand how to get into the system, maybe you could find the candy.
It shows the landscape of a forest until a google page is opened, "NO SIGNAL" is typed, then an old green-on-black system interface showing the text:
It then flashes to a title saying "NO SIGNAL"
With the mouse on "enter"
It says "welcome user" and then has an old tv static style ending
The second video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwPndnZM21Y
The title reads: anon girl
The description reads: you're getting close...keep looking
There is a skype page open. And a GUI that says welcome user and different commands. IT then has a user by the name of annon_01100111011010010111001001101100, which translates to annon_girl, types the message: "meet me at 4 bitcoin?"
At 0:25 a commenter said the spectrogram says: "CANDY?", however, I can not confirm this myself.
It then flashes to a blue screen with white binary text. This text translates to: "we need to get some", or "we need some candy", I am not really sure.
The third video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7GSKGvqDME
The title reads: addicted
The description reads: can't stop looking...been smashing my keys and haven't gotten anywhere... this is harder than I expected. I make errors sometimes
It then shows a classic pong game in the green-on-black style. With a female TTS voice speaking a code I could not exactly make out
Then, there is something that says: "ALERT!", with a QR code under it. It leads you to https://www.onthewagon.org, an addiction support site.
It flashes to him writing in C++, a commenter decided to copy down and search it and it led to this: https://code.sololearn.com/cYamXZD9TbdM/#cpp
A program that does not have working code, however, someone replied guessing that the viewers need to copy down the code written and repair the program.
It then simply ends.
The fourth video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ImuTfrBTtY
The title reads: "No Players ON"
In this video, he plays the indie horror game No Players Online
The description reads: look, login, users joining...
This video has a pinned comment from him which translates to a link to the game:
Someone said they had a comment reading: "Been looking for a few days, the game apparently shows how to enter the candy"
It would be safe to assume that this is affiliated with No Players Online in some way, shape or form, however, I don't know exactly how.
He plays the game for a few seconds after an old atari VHS video plays.
It shows him staring at a phonograph in the game until the screen goes to black.
When the screen is black, you hear the sound of a man either taking a deep breath or sighing.
It then shows an old CGI style video of a VHS tape falling down
They click the tape, and it gets smaller
Until an old "PLAY" screen shows up.
IT ends with an old MS-DOS style screen.
-> -> ->
Capture the flag project beta v0.23,
Which I am almost certain is part of the game, if I remember correctly.
The fifth video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNqvv32_q3I
The title reads: data
The description reads: "If people think that their information is not private, that screws us in the long turn."
It shows the program I mentioned earlier, and then a video of Mark Zuckerberg explaining what makes Facebook useful, and how the information about users is only available to those that the user wants it to be. There is a watermark in the upper right-hand corner that says CS50.tv
This turned out to be a lecture from 2014, as cs50 is apparently an Ivy League computer science program or something similar.
The video ends playing upbeat music as it goes back to the "enter" screen, ending as he clicks enter.
The sixth video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VP6CYjnXPl0
This video was actually a 2 hour long live stream, but is rather static in visual aspects.
It starts with a windowed loading screen, with the classic buffer wheel. Behind it is a mountain landscape wallpaper.
It is completely silent until about 4:43, give or take, where there is background noise.
At 1:29:32, give or take, once again, a loud boot-up type sound plays, and the buffer wheel is replaced with:
THE CODE IS
The title translates to: loading
(not very surprising lol)
the description translates to: Social media has completely taken over people's lives and perspectives, people don't understand who they are anymore
at 1:55:38, a man with a British accent starts talking, it seems to be a clip from yet another lecture or conference
The seventh video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hev2ecFlWkA&t=7s
The title translates to: security
The Description reads: they are warning you
The first 1/3 of the video(give or take) starts with an iPhone commercial from September: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-l61NE0eqkw
It then has an audio clip of one of those old bad quality youtube videos done by kids while a ringing is also simultaneously happening and getting louder
the only words I could make out are: "Guys, mic moving, I just wanna make this quick video alright I'll leave...." at this point, the ringing sound got too loud to understand what was being said
It then goes to an apple site with words like "apple data", "information requests", "providing data", etc bolded. He then highlights with the cursor as he reads
Then the ringing quiets and you hear a harsh and quick sound as you hear a man exhaling, the screen then says
they collect data to predict your behavior to create a world for you to believe creating an environment entertaining you with digets on a screen for money and greed
The ringing returns with a news report about the former president, Donald Trump's health.
It ends with an audio clip of a tutorial, don't know what it is about while the news report audio is playing, and a video of Mark Zuckerberg talking, with no audio.
The eighth video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ta-oIP_XdmE
The title reads: dark net
The description reads: creating an environment where data isn't sold, keeping information private, having conversations without "followers" but with individuals. no marketing to keep people misinformed about topics to continue watch time/gather more data to make a profit. having private conversations like this with people giving constructive input to help or solve a problem with any topic without algorithms trying to track your behaviors and sell you on a lie.
It plays a clip from that documentary narrated by Keanu Reeves about the deep web
that is about all there is to this one.
The ninth and final video as of now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxWfDmZ4lIM
The title reads: value
the description reads: while everyone is engaged in communicating about misinformation, they're tracking behaviors and creating environments for you to engage more.
The video starts with a man ranting about how there is a murder every day and how society has gone to shit, it plays throughout the entirety of the video.
As the audio is playing, it is showing news clips of riots and things closed due to covid.
that is about all.
My initial thoughts
This is definitely an ARG. There is no question about it. This dude is also definitely a fan of Mr. Robot and Black Mirror, due to the style of his videos. What I am most curious about is how this is aimed towards SOG viewers. The single link I was able to find to people getting random comments is: they recently commented on a SOG video. Why would this guy want us to solve this? Another comment compared this to Cicada 3301. Could this be a recruitment puzzle? What are your guy's thoughts? If you need any more stuff from me, just ask.
AND NO THIS IS NOT MINE, IM WAY TOO DUMB TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS. THE REDDIT POST ABOUT A RANDOM COMMENT JUST PEAKED MY INTEREST.
Here is a link to the original thread:
This is his Twitter account:
Let's Talk: KoЯn's 'Untouchables', a profound artistic statement from a nu-metal band?
One album in their catalogue that I believe stands head and shoulders above all, for its artistic statement, as opposed to inciting the teenage angst they are normally associated with, is Untouchables, look past the 2 singles of Here to Stay and Thoughtless and there is a strange musical world to experience.
The band set out for this album to be their Magnum Opus, it took an entire month for the drums to be set up to perfection, the record took 2.5 years to record. The mission statement is quite clear: Maximal mental derangement.
The musical atmosphere is incredibly striking, I haven't heard many albums with such a distinctive aura, that fits the themes of the songs (mental issues, breakdowns etc) so well. Of course, these themes are rehashed all the time in every genre, that's not the interesting part, how could it be? What is interesting is how Korn have been able to sonically capture this theme that makes this album such a standout. Every song has a bleak, thick veil brought about by the huge wall of sound from the guitars, up to 7 tracks playing at once, vocals have up to 24 tracks layered to create a dreary, choir like effect. The result is an incredibly dense sound, you can almost physically feel the power as a result of the layering. If you are looking for lyrical prowess, forget it, that is not what this album is about, I hate to say it, but this one is all about the vibe man.
The use of bizarre sounding effects on the guitars is done just right. They are used sparingly mainly in verses/intros, so as not to be too much for listeners. Just like you often find in 80's music, Korn have employed the use of multiple guitar melodies with heavy processing/background vocals that are buried in the mix, behind the lead vocals, in the choruses of the songs. This is done to create an effect that is greater than the sum of its parts, there is so much going on your mind struggles to clearly discern the different parts playing, it lumps it all together and you get this effect of a huge wash of sound. The harmonies that are playing behind the singing are simple, but made to be very dissonant, the result is it creates an overwhelming sense of despair and sounds downright disturbed. A song like Make Believe is a prime example of this, which I found a little too weird at first. After hearing the chorus I craved more, the guitars sound like sirens going off in a mental asylum and the backing vocals take on a haunting shimmering sound.
Heavy music will naturally lend itself to creating dark atmospheres with more ease than other genres, but the band have been restrained by not relying on heavy guitars playing at all times. They often present themselves for a few measures, then the eery clean guitars with special effects chime in, almost as if even the relief from the persons derangement (signified by the heavy guitars) is not true relief, they are stuck sick, just waiting for the next problem to surface. A prime example of this is 'I'm Hiding', the intro bludgeons you with some heavy guitars, then a plodding bassline moves in with some watery guitars and twisted vocals that sets a tense tone for the song. Its almost 2 minutes before the heavy guitars truly set in again for the chorus.
What makes the album so listenable is that the songs are rather formulaic and simple in structure. There is no speeding up/slowing down, no abrupt transitions and no odd time signatures. The choruses are catchy and there are plenty of songs with nice interludes.
A great example of them winding down the intensity is the interlude in 'One More Time', the section has a falling, dreamy feeling to it that eventually turns sour when the guitars come pounding in for one final ride on the chorus.
Another song with a steamrolling chorus is ‘No One’s There’, the bass and drum crash as you enter the chorus hits like a shotgun slug, and the drums create this tumbling feeling.
And how could we forget about the album artwork? A group of misfit children with vacant stares and soulless facial expressions. From start to finish this album is a downright creepy.
What do you think, teenage angst or a profound artistic statement?
