So Help Me God/SWISH - Waves/TLOP complete timeline

Heads up boys, it's a long one.I cant include links to my sources for obvious reasons but most of them (whiteboard pics, interviews, ads, official singles) can be found with a simple google search. If I got anything wrong or missed something, let me know and I'll fix it. I'm not a genius on this topic. But I was an active ye fan throughout this time period and I remember a fair bit. I'll probably be updating this over time.
With that being said, SHMG/SWISH don't get enough love around here. We all know and love Yandhi but its time we show a lil more love to the OG unreleased ye album that everyone wanted to get their hands on.

  • June 2013, Rick Rubin speaks on Yeezus, saying "Initially, [Ye] thought there were going to be 16 songs on the album... I said... ‘Maybe this is two albums. Maybe this is just the first half,'” . When asked if that meant another Yeezus was on the horizon, Rubin responded, “Might be.”
  • August 2013, after the VMA's, Miley Cyrus and Kanye go to the studio and record a remix of Black Skinhead, intended for an EP of leftovers and remixes/alt versions of tracks from Yeezus (this EP was confirmed by Rick Rubin in a genius interview.) [I think I recall ye himself also speaking about it once but I can't find the interview]. This remix leaks online years later.
  • September 2013, an unreleased song called "Awesome" is played in an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. It had previously been performed live, even before Yeezus came out.
  • October 2013
    • We get our first taste of I Am Not Home, an outtake from Yeezus, at the Yeezus Tour.
    • The Been Trill In The Field Vol. 3 Mixtape is officially released. The tape features "Mano - Been Trill Real" which is essentially a super early version of 3500 by Travis Scott. Travis later confirmed that 3500 was originally going to be a Kanye song, meant for his forthcoming album. While Kanye isn't present on the version of Been Trill Real that we have, it felt appropriate to put here.
  • November 2013
    • At Leonardo Dicaprio's birthday party, Kanye plays two unreleased songs: "Special/Bitch Please" and "When I See It". Both of which we have versions of.
    • Kanye says in an interview "I haven’t named my next album, but I have started on it"
  • December 2013
    • Q-Tip announces in an interview that he's executive producing Kanye's new album with Rick Rubin.
    • Kanye says "I think my next album is going to be 8 songs" at Miami's Art Basel.
  • Cashmere Cat posts a vine sometime circa late 2013 where we can hear an early version of the Wolves instrumental being played.
  • January 2014
    • Joe Perez designs album art and website concepts for Ye's upcoming album which is, at this point in time, referred to as "Lost Yeezus" and/or "Yeezus 2". It seems like the album started as the, previously mentioned, EP of Yeezus remixes and leftovers, and then evolved into something bigger.
    • Joe Perez also designs a Wolves logo concept for Kanye.
  • March 2014, Rick Ross - Sanctified (ft. Kanye West) is officially released. I've heard people say it was considered for ye's album at some point but that might be false [needs fact checking]. It's worth noting that, in his verse, Kanye says "people sayin 'Ye we need another Yeezus'". We have an OG version with slight differences in the beat.
  • May 2014, an Adidas commercial is released featuring unreleased song, God Level. When the final version of the song leaks online years later, the file is also dated May 2014. It's worth noting that God Level shares a sample with Can U Be.
  • June 2014, in a GQ interview Kanye reveals some lyrics to a new song he's working on, All Day.
  • August 2014
    • A LQ early version of All Day leaks online. It's worth noting that theres like 5 different fucking versions of All Day that end up leaking throughout the years (even more if you include the versions that we've only heard snippets of) but this is the first version we ever heard. The alternate versions include features from Kendrick Lamar and 2 Chainz, rougher Kanye vocals with slightly different lyrics, and changes to the instrumental.
    • Piss On Your Grave (or just "Grave") is previewed live for the first time. At this point in time it's Kanye's song, not Travis'. This is later confirmed by an official Apple Music ad showing an apple music library containing "Kanye West - Grave (ft. Travis Scott)" complete with cover art similar to the All Day artwork. The solo Kanye version of the song leaks online years later.
    • A snippet of Chief Keef - Nobody (ft. Kanye West) is released. The full song is officially released later in 2014 but this is the first bit of it that we've heard up until this point. I'm not sure if the song was ever intended for ye's album but it appears on the GOOD Music 2014 whiteboard so I figured I would include it here. Also on that whiteboard: Awesome, Tom Cruise, and You Aint No Model (which we just got our first snippet of recently)
  • Fans discover that Cyhi's Spotify has a private, unplayable playlist called "Yeezus 2" (the playlist wasnt actually discovered until 2017 but considering the title and the songs, its safe to assume this is from late 2014/early 2015ish). The playlist contains these songs in this order:
  1. 333 (???)
  2. MM (???)
  3. WISI (When I See It)
  4. W (Wolves)
  5. OO (Only One)
  6. AY (???)
  • December 2014, Only One is officially released.
  • Theres a whiteboard pic circa late 2014 / early 2015 [need fact checking on this, i dont know the exact date], partially obscured by ye's big ass head, that has these songs in this order
  1. Nina Chop
  2. God Level
  3. Wolves
  4. Th... (obscured by ye's big ass head) [possibly The Mind Is Powerful or The Ballad Of Kanye "The Chosen One" West?]
  5. Ho... (obscured by ye's big ass head)
  6. All Day
  7. Only One
  8. Sens... (obscured by ye's big ass head) [I've heard people say theres an unreleased song from this era called "Sensational" so this is probably that. No public snippet out yet tho]
  9. Tell Your Friends (Considering he's written "Tell Your Friends" here rather than "When I See It", I think it's safe to assume that The Weeknd was involved at this point in time at least as a feature but the song still belonged to Ye)
  • January 2015, FourFiveSeconds is officially released. Its generally regarded as a Rihanna single featuring Kanye and Paul McCartney, however both Kanye and Cyhi have stated on separate occasions that this was originally Kanye's song, meant for his album. It's worth noting that there is a pre-mix version of the song that leaks years later.
  • February 2015
    • At Yeezy Season 1, Wolves is played for the first time publicly. Its revealed this will be the first track on Kanye's forthcoming album.
    • Big Sean - All Your Fault (ft. Kanye West) is officially released. The song started as a solo ye song titled "Tom Cruise". ("Tom Cruise" also appeared on the 2014 Mexico GOOD Music whiteboard)
    • Joe Perez designs art concepts for the single releases of Wolves and All Day. They are to be released in the form of shrink-wrapped USBs and CDs. In the All Day concepts, it's revealed that the album title was, at this point in time, called "Ye-Ye" (probably in reference to the line in All Day where he says "People saying Ye-Ye, take it easy, 20 Gs for the Yeezys, off of eBay").
  • March 2015
    • Kanye takes to twitter to officially unveil the cover art and new title of his forthcoming album: "So Help Me God". All Day is officially released as the first single.
    • A video is released by Revolt documenting the making of All Day with in-studio footage. At one point in the video we hear Kanye briefly sing unreleased song Southside Serenade before playing a snippet of Wolves.
    • Awesome leaks online. Its worth noting that it's not the same version as the one played in Keeping Up With The Kardashians. This version seems to be earlier.
  • April 2015
    • Mitus Touch, a reference track for Rihanna, performed by Kanye, produced by Mitus, leaks online. Another version featuring J. Cole leaks years later.
    • Vic Mensa - U Mad (ft. Kanye West) is officially released. I've heard it was at one point considered for So Help Me God but that could be false [needs fact checking]
    • Joe Perez designs more album art concepts for Kanye. In these concepts, the album is titled "Chiraq" and features an aesthetic similar to Yeezus. It's possible these concepts were made for a Kanye-curated soundtrack for Spike Lee's film "Chiraq" and not Ye's solo album. But based on the Yeezus aesthetic I doubt that.
  • May 2015
    • Ye announces on twitter that he's changing the title of his album from "So Help Me God" to "SWISH".
    • An early version of Feedback is played in a nightclub by DJ Windows98. The first time the public has heard it.
  • June 2015
    • At Ye's legendary Glastonbury set, 3 unreleased songs are heard being played backstage (in this order):
  1. I Feel Like That
  2. Can U Be
  3. Mitus Touch
  • Travis Scott - 3500 is officially released. Still no Kanye on this version but again, its confirmed the song was Kanye's at one point. It's worth noting that there is also a demo version of 3500, more recent than Been Trill Real but older than the officially released version of 3500, that leaks years later. No ye on that version either.
  • July 2015, the music video for All Day is shown in private screenings. The video doubles as a music video for unreleased song I Feel Like That. This video later leaks online, giving us a HQ rip of I Feel Like That. (It's worth noting that the I Feel Like That instrumental is based around a sample of Only One being played backwards).
  • August 2015
    • The Weeknd - Tell Your Friends is officially released. It's produced by Kanye and features some heavily manipulated Kanye vocals during an instrumental break in the song. The song started as a solo Kanye demo before being given to The Weeknd.
    • An official Apple Music ad is released showing an apple music library containing "Kanye West - Grave (ft. Travis Scott)" complete with cover art similar to the All Day artwork. This confirms that the song was at one point Kanye's single and not Travis'. The solo Kanye version of the song leaks online years later.
  • September 2015
    • Two new songs are played at Yeezy Season 2: an early version of Don't Jump (which later leaked online with a Kendrick Lamar feature) and an early version of Fade with a minimalistic instrumental
    • Travis Scott - Piss On Your Grave (ft. Kanye West) is finally officially released.
    • We get our first snippet of The Game - Mula (ft. Kanye West). Supposedly intended for Swish at one point in time but that could be false [needs fact checking]. The song is officially released in October but this is our first taste of it.
  • October 2015
    • Kanye officially releases When I See It, his solo demo version of Tell Your Friends by The Weeknd, on Soundcloud alongside a remix/reimagining of Say You Will from 808s & Heartbreak.
  • December 2015, FACTS is officially released on Soundcloud. (Note: This is what I personally consider to be the end of the "SHMG/Swish" era and the beginning of the "Waves/TLOP" era. Just my two cents)
  • January 2016
    • Sia - Reaper is released. The song is co-written and co-produced by Kanye. The song shares some elements with Coming Home by Pusha T which is also co-produced by Kanye. Unsure which came first. I remember reading news headlines around this time that claimed Reaper was originally meant to be a Kanye song for his album before being given to Sia. Not sure how factual that is.
    • The legendary listening party snippets of Can U Be, including the "outro" snippet, are leaked online. However I dont believe these snippets were actually recorded at this time, I'm pretty sure they were recorded at a 2015 listening party. [This needs fact checking for sure, i'm just basing this part off of my own memory. Somebody let me know] [total sidetrack here: as someone who was very active and aware at this point in time, i can tell you that this is where the strong desire for Can U Be started and the MAIN REASON people wanted it at the time was because of the "outro" snippet which we later found out was a snippet of a different song. Its frustrating to me how over the years people have forgotten why we even wanted this song in the first place and people just hop on the Can U Be bandwagon now which confuses buyers/sellers. Can U Be is only the most sought after Kanye leak because people initially thought it had this crazy fuckin outro and then by the time we realized we had confused it for a different song, it had already become the popular opinion to want Can U Be. And now Can U Be is basically vaulted. Meanwhile THATS NOT EVEN THE FUCKING SONG WE WANTED IN THE FIRST PLACE. Bring back the desire for the song we thought was the Can U Be outro (idk the official title, I've heard it referred to as "Untitled (prod. Mitus)". The one with the crazy choir and explosive synths and Kanye singing "all of these WAAaaves" all autotuned and shit)
    • Real Friends is officially released on Soundcloud. Theres a preview of a new song, No More Parties In LA (ft. Kendrick Lamar), attached to it.
    • No More Parties In LA (ft. Kendrick Lamar) is officially released.
    • Theres some grainy low quality stills of an in-studio Snapchat video in which we can see a whiteboard that says "SWISH" on top and:
  1. Wolves
  2. Real Friends
  • The rest is unintelligible. This looks to be an early version of the tracklist in which Wolves was still the album opener.
  • In the leaked footage of the infamous Taylor Swift phone call, which happened around this time, we see Kanye working on an early version of the tracklist and get a pretty clear shot:
  1. Hood Famous (an alt title for Nina Chop/Famous)
  2. Wolves
  3. Real Friends
  4. No More Parties In LA
  5. 30 Hours
  6. Highlights
  7. Fuck Rt Now (an alt title for Freestyle 4)
  8. Fade
  9. I Feel Like That
  10. Only One
  11. Father Stretch My Hands
  12. Feedback
  13. FML
  • Kanye tweets out the first official public tracklist for SWISH. It would go on to receive many changes (renaming of songs, changes to the track order). [Documenting all the minute changes to the tracklist would probably get a little redundant but if yall are interested I will add them]:
  1. Nina Chop
  2. Father Stretch My Hands
  3. Waves
  4. High Lights
  5. 30 Hours
  6. No More Parties In LA
  7. Fade
  8. FML
  9. Real Friends
  10. Wolves
  • Joe Perez designs new album art, animations (Kanye stated at one point that he wanted SWISH to be the first ever album to have an animated cover), merch (which featured a completely different aesthetic to that of the TLOP merch which comes later. Here we see oversized tees with tie dye and bleach stains), and physical release packaging for SWISH (a transparent vinyl/CD and a USB in a stone tablet). The tagline for the album at this point is "SWISH: The Overground Hell Road". This is seen in many of the album art concepts from around this time. These concepts feature nude 3D animated models in religious poses. They have a sort of uncanny valley, IMVU aesthetic (the models are actually quite literally from IMVU, confirmed by Joe Perez).
  • Ye changes the title of the album from "SWISH" to "Waves"
  • 2Chainz documents a Waves album recording session on his Snapchat story. Sounds like Kanye is finishing up Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1. (It's worth noting that 2 demo versions of this song have leaked since then: One featuring a slightly different instrumental and a Kendrick Lamar feature, the other sounding almost finished, similar to the one we heard on 2Chainz Snapchat.)
  • Fameolous leaks cellphone footage of a Kanye mumble demo being played. Fans dub it "Get Off Me" but its actually just part of "Can U Be". We know this because we hear the same bassline and "get off me" sample in the Glastonbury recording of Can U Be.
  • A snippet of an early version of 30 Hours with an alternate instrumental is leaked by Fameolous as well. (I recall this snippet leak making some major news headlines because of the line about Amber Rose.)
  • Joe Perez designs more album art, animations, and merch for Waves. Still using the IMVU aesthetic. The merch features lots of denim with titles and lyrics of songs, namely Real Friends and title track, Waves.
  • February 2016
  • Kanye briefly considers changing the title of the album back to "So Help Me God". This is confirmed by some album art and merch concepts from Joe Perez. The album art is still using the IMVU aesthetic but the merch is now beginning to take the shape of the TLOP merch that we all know. [also i remember Kim Kardashian did a poll on twitter around this time being like "vote on Kanye's album title" and the options were Swish, Waves, and So Help Me God. So Help Me God actually won the poll.]
  • Another round of merch design is done by Joe Perez in which the logos for SWISH, Waves, and So Help Me God are slapped on top of each other messily. I recall there being memes/twitter posts/talk in the media at this point in time about how many times Ye had changed the album title. It seems as if Kanye was leaning into those talks in a kind of tongue-in-cheek way with these merch concepts.
  • Kanye tweets that hes in the studio recording the final verses for his album which he has now renamed to "T.L.O.P". He doesnt reveal what this stands for yet.
  • Kanye reveals the final official cover art and title of his new album, The Life Of Pablo. The art takes a completely different aesthetic approach than all of the previous concepts shown, scrapping the IMVU idea.
  • A listening party for TLOP is held at MSG. Kanye plays these songs (in order):
  1. Ultralight Beam
  2. Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1
  3. Pt. 2
  4. Feedback
  5. Famous
  6. Low Lights
  7. Highlights
  8. Freestyle 4
  9. I Love Kanye
  10. FML
  11. Real Friends
  12. Wolves
  13. Franks Track [he implies that the album has ended after this track but then goes on to play...]
  14. Facts (Charlie Heat Version)
  15. Fade
  16. Young Thug - With Them
  17. Vic Mensa - Danger
  18. Feedback (again)
  19. Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1 (again)
  20. Pt. 2 (again)
  21. Low Lights (again)
  22. Highlights (again)
  23. All Day (its worth noting that he plays a rough demo version here with unfinished vocals and a slightly different instrumental)
  • Waves is noticeably missing. Ye almost cut it from the album last minute but Chance fought to leave it on the album.
  • A trailer for the Only One Video Game is also shown at the listening party. The trailer features an alternate version of the song Only One with a Caroline Shaw feature.
  • 30 Hours is first released on Soundcloud. Slightly different from the album version. He later takes this version down.
  • The Life Of Pablo is officially released. The album is updated a handful of times to fix mixes, add background vocals on FSMH Pt.1, change lyrics on Famous, etc. (again, i could go over all the changes in a separate post if you guys want.) The tracklist today looks like this:
  1. Ultralight Beam
  2. Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1
  3. Pt. 2
  4. Famous
  5. Feedback
  6. Low Lights
  7. Highlights
  8. Freestyle 4
  9. I Love Kanye
  10. Waves
  11. FML
  12. Real Friends
  13. Wolves
  14. Frank's Track
  15. Silver Surfer Intermission
  16. 30 Hours
  17. No More Parties In LA
  18. Facts (Charlie Heat version)
  19. Fade
  20. Saint Pablo

Other songs, that may have been intended for the album at one point or another, that i thought were worth mentioning (if i made a list of all of them, including alternate versions it would be long af. i may do that in a separate post):
  • Good Things Don't Last (cut from Yeezus. could have been part of Lost Yeezus)
  • One I Love (cut from Yeezus. could have been part of Lost Yeezus)
  • Perfect Bitch (cut from Yeezus. could have been part of Lost Yeezus)
  • NoNoNo (cut from Yeezus. could have been part of Lost Yeezus)
  • Fire (reference track for Big Sean's song of the same name) [could have been part of Lost Yeezus]
  • Ultimate Lie
  • Be That N**** (this might just be part of OG All Day and not a separate track)
  • I Dont Give A Fuck
  • New Angels
  • Wolves (ft. Drake, Bjork)
  • Nina Chop (ft. Young Thug)
  • Nina Chop (ft. Chance The Rapper)
  • Keyon Christ - forever (Producer of the "Can U Be Outro" made his own song using the "Can U Be Outro" instrumental and officially released it on his soundcloud)
  • Keyon Christ - Forever Mitus (the official instrumental for what we know as the 'Can U Be outro". The producer has taken some creative liberties and altered it a bit. But at it's core, its the same beat.)
  • Madlib Freestyle 6
  • Fall Out Of Heaven
  • Highlights (ft. Madonna)
  • FML (Mitus instrumental demo)
  • FML (ft. Travis Scott)
  • Real Friends (solo Ye version with Mike Dean synths)
  • Paper Thin Love (30 Hours OG)
  • 30 Hours (Drake reference track)
  • Saint Pablo (Mitus Version)
  • Deja Vu
  • Appeal

In conclusion, it irks me when I see people say "isnt Swish just a shorter, less finished version of TLOP?" cuz it was so much more than that. I think when people say that, theyre referring to the first tracklist ye tweeted in Jan 2016 but by that point, the vision had changed drastically. 2015 Swish was a different album.
When I think SHMG/SWISH, I think: All Day, Can U Be, I Feel Like That, God Level.
When I think TLOP, i think: Ultralight Beam, Pt. 2, I Love Kanye, Low Lights.
Seeing the negative reception to the Special/Bitch Please leak blew my mind cuz that was one of my grails for so long. I dont think some of yall newer fans appreciated how blessed we are to finally hear that in CDQ. I acknowledge that its not necessarily amazing as a standalone track but, for archival purposes, it's an important piece of ye history. I really fuckin want the v2 that Alek was selling, even if the differences are subtle.
Since the day it debuted at MSG, TLOP has always seemed, in my opinion, more all-over-the-place and less focused than I think SHMG/Swish would have been. We already had a taste of what SHMG/SWISH would have been via some of the singles, song leaks, the leaked music video, and art/merch concepts. It bothers me that Kanye worked for 3 years on an album that seemed to have a pretty consistent tone/sonic theme and then randomly one month before it dropped, he changed EVERYTHING. Cover art, title, concept, most of the songs, etc.I'm something of a superfan who, pretty closely, followed everything Kanye-related throughout 2014 and 2015. And when I heard TLOP for the first time at the listening party, I was confused af. Everything had changed. Even the few SHMG/SWISH leftovers that made it onto the album had been changed (Famous, Wolves, Fade) [not saying that this is inherently a bad thing, just an observation. I think we can all agree Famous is better than Nina Chop. But I do genuinely prefer Yeezy Season 2 Fade over the officially released version].
I like damn near every single song on TLOP but cant help but feel like its one of ye's most inconsistent albums. It seems as though songs like Ultralight Beam, Pt. 2, I Love Kanye, Low Lights, etc. were afterthoughts made literally a month before the album dropped (to be fair, this isn't all bad. Ultralight Beam is fantastic). I wish he had replaced songs like those with some of the other tracks that he had been working on for the past 3 years (Can U Be, I Feel Like That, Don't Jump, When I See It/Tell Your Friends) rather than scrapping them completely and/or giving them away.I dont mean for this to come off like I'm hating. I'm still a die hard ye fan and I still like TLOP quite a bit. It's just interesting to think about the album that we almost got.
