You can find the original post, along with all the shiny covers, here.

If you would like to be kept up to date with the upcoming lists, please subscribe to my newsletter by clicking this link. I don’t send out letters too often, pretty much once a month when this list goes out… and occasionally if I release a book or something.
As always, this is not a comprehensive list, but only includes all the books I have heard about so far.
If you have a fantasy novel you are self publishing in August or beyond, let me know either in the comments, or by emailing me, and I shall add it to the page. There are but 3 requirements:
  1. It must be a self published fantasy novel.
  2. It must have a Goodreads page.
  3. It must have a cover.

MTGO Modern Showcase Challenge T32 (08/08/2020)

MTGO results are back! Wizards fixed the site/MTGO bug causing events to not compile to the mothership (props to Wizards for acknowledging this on Twitter too) and we're back in business. Yesterday featured a Showcase Challenge that many of us probably watched on Twitch; I know I was rooting for yellowhat. These events are slightly more competitive than regular Challenges with better prizes and lower frequency. We should always pay attention to results from events like this. As always, here's the T32 with spice and tech noted:

I had a MUCH longer writeup, but I stupidly forgot to save it as a draft while writing and accidentally hit something weird on my keyboard. Now my long writeup is lost in whatever purgatory all the Modern artifact decks went to after the Astrolabe ban. RIP. I'm too annoyed to rewrite the whole thing, but here are the highlights:
  • Aggressive decks were the big winners this week with 13 Rx Aggro options (8 Prowess, 5 Burn) plus 2 Dredge, 1 Crabvine, and 2 Goblins. With over half of the field on these decks, make sure you have a plan to stabilize and prepare for some very specific anti-aggro technology: see those beefcake Elder Gargaroth's in the Ponza maindeck. Also, Rakdos Prowess may have the best T8 run, but Izzet Prowess continues to impress. Expect more Izzet spikes to run the high velocity, low variance, interactive/proactive hybrid as the season progresses. Overall, I think the aggro uptick is a symptom of a relatively unsolved metagame with few premier events and virtually zero big paper ones. Aggro tends to shine in these circumstances, especially when Astrolabe's departure means less obnoxious Uro to stonewall the horde.
  • Interactive decks were a bit lean this week, especially if we look at just control and midrange categories. We have three UGx control options, Ponza, and Jund bringing in just 5 total copies. Traverse Shadow and Eldrazi & Taxes round out this category. Only one of the control decks ran Reclamation, but I don't think it's a coincidence that this was the winning list. I'm increasingly confident UGx Reclamation (probably Temur, maybe something else) is the secret, not-so-secret best deck in Modern. At this point, I just think it's easier to play and tune some go-face strategy like Izzet Prowess or the other aggro bruisers than to figure out the marginal gains on playing +1 Typhoon vs. +1 Fact or Fiction. Most of us average MTGO grinders can't make those decisions, so until the true technicians solve the puzzle, most of us will just keep pushing goons into the redzone. Expect to see more controlling decks as better players figure all this out.
  • Ramp decks remained viable as they often are in Modern. They're further down the standings with more MD anti-aggro concessions (All is Dust, Thragtusk, Wails, Dismembers, etc.), but they're still represented. We also saw a batty but spicy ramp list in 11th running Vials alongside Titans and Fields; I'm calling it "Ramp and Taxes" until someone figures out a better name or points me to a more "official" source on it. I can't think of a better way to acknowledge the odd combination of Tax staples like Thalia/Vial/Quarter alongside Reclaimers/Dryads/Titans.
  • Notable absences include Humans, non-Ad Naus combo decks (Storm, Neobrand, Devoted Devastation, etc.), and all of the artifact decks. Maybe a true artifact loyalist like Kanister or Matt Nass can brew their way out of the current artifact decline, but between the loss of Affinity, Urza, Hardened Scales, Lantern, Whir, etc., it's not looking promising. Special shoutouts to Elder Gargaroth in that Ponza maindeck, Hour of Promise (spec target, financiers?) in two maindecks, and flavor god GoblinK1ng running not just a Goblins list but also one without Snoop combo.
  • As a whole, the metagame looks merely fine with some promising areas of growth and some potential warning signs to monitor. Aggro is high but that's expected if the metagame is less mature due to the lack of major paper events and a recent banning. I also suspect a lot of MTGO streamers/players have temporarily shifted to Pioneer even if just to try it out; the format is a LOT better after Wizards' essential bans. We'll see where Modern goes from here but for now, be prepared to play and beta a lot of these T4 aggro decks. Also, play Reclamation. It's way better than we're seeing.
As always, let me know in the comments if I missed or mischaracterized something. I probably did gloss over some major metagame points in the writeup after having to hastily rewrite everything, so let me know if I need to address anything. See you all in the comments as we discuss where Modern goes from here!
