Memoirs of a common grinder - my first (intensive) month in Gwent

This will be a long read, so if you’re not into lengthy articles, or dislike numbers and statistics, I do actively discourage you from reading any further :)
With the Season of the Cat just finishing, and Ciri’s journey as well, and after what I’d call the biggest grind of my life, I thought I’ll share my story. There’s a bit of my personal views on Gwent, and different statistics here - good thing about Gwent is that it provides all sorts of data very easily. Some were manual counting though - a bit annoying with cards rarity and ownership, especially if the numbers don’t add up when comparing my calculations with official data on totals on Gwent site...
I’m writing mostly to show what one is capable of within roughly a month of fully dedicating himself to playing Gwent - a very generous game, as I haven’t seen yet any other with IAP, where one can go that far without being stopped by a paywall. But also I’d like to ask you for opinion regarding what should my next steps be, and what were yours after getting to the point where I am. I definitely want to play further, just not so intensive, and with different goals in mind.
If anyone would call me a no-life, they’d probably be right in the month of Gwentober. COVID helped, but doesn’t fully justify my obsession. But to be honest, I don’t see any point of doing it anymore on such scale. I’ve done all I physically could have, maximised what could of the journey and season. Now I just want to play for fun, just like in that episode of South Park “Make Love Not Warcraft” :)
Let’s begin with the overview how I started - many years back I was playing a physical card game, called Kult, probably nobody remembers it anymore, and I’m rather happy I stopped playing, as the boosters did cost way too much for a teenager’s wallet. As for the Witcher - I read all the books first, many years before I played TW3. Both are awesome. I really enjoyed Gwent in TW3, even though at some point it became way too easy. Then I heard it’s becoming standalone, but somehow never wanted to try, as I heard it was in a long beta, and that some changes are revolutionary. Having finished TW3 after approaching it for the 2nd time this year, I have accidentally seen Thronebreaker being released on iOS. Even though it’s way too easy, I had a lot of fun, and out of curiosity clicked on the Gwent banner. And here we are... I got hooked on immediately, to the point of quickly replaying Thronebreaker on easy, just to get all the achievements for more RPs.
In the beginning I made some noob mistakes. Crafted some bronze cards, not realising I’ll have all of them soon anyway. Chose a few nodes it reward book just because they were there, not to maximise ore. Probably the biggest one though was opening quite a lot of kegs before getting to level 60. If only I knew earlier of the perk of having the rare cards probability increased... Nevertheless, some of the finds in kegs were really good - never would have played my Elven deck if some really good elf units drops didn’t happen.
Just to clarify, my focus was solely on getting as much resource, as possible. The only cosmetics I have unlocked in reward trees were either by early mistakes, or by getting through them to story nodes. I have also decided to not read anything about meta decks, as I took a lot of pleasure from discovering combos myself.
Summary of the month below, sadly I don’t know how to make Reddit posts pleasant to the eye, but I hope it’s readable:
  • Money spent: one starter pack, bought after 2 weeks of playing, and one premium journey pass with 25 levels, bought 4 days before the journey end :) That’s probably around 24£.
  • Level: 60 once, and then 53
  • Journey progress: 137, including 25 from fast travel, 60 from journey quests, and 52 from grind. Sadly had only one month, so missed out on the RP for getting to 150.
  • Contracts finished (including the Thronebreaker ones): 244 / 671. Didn’t touch the arena, apart from playing once to check it out.
  • Reward points gained (and all spent): 860
  • Kegs opened: 380
  • Ore: 43,368 (28,800 spent already on kegs)
  • Scraps: 22,569 (4540 spent - some admittedly very stupidly in early days, but in general saving them for once the journey ends and I open all the kegs I’ll craft). Less than half spent on cards I’m actually using often - Oneiromancy, Vernossiel, Ele’yas. Some were fun though to use for a while, even if didn’t stay for long - Matta Hu’uri, Portal, Mahakam Horn, King Belohun, Musicians of Blaviken. The rest I can’t even remember.
  • Meteorite powder: 4700 (1220 spent, just to unlock the RP, waiting for something better to spend it on than premium cards)
  • Milled cards - 1150, with the setting milling any additional copy, to maximise the resources gain
  • Amount of matches played to get there: 528 (and this is the sad picture of my last month’s grind - that’s roughly 18 / day, assuming a game takes 12 minutes, that’s 3.5 h a day, plus all the time spent playing around with deck and Switcheroo - probably 4h a day)
  • Amount of wins: perfect 50% - 256, plus 16 draws, longest win streak - 15. Lost a lot when chasing some specific contracts and quests, with very bad decks built to quickly deliver the result.
  • Collection progress: Overall - 848/1198 Monsters - 119/150 Nilfgaard - 110/150 Scoia’tael - 114/148 Northern Realms - 112/148 Skellige - 106/150 Syndicate - 131/186 Neutral - 156/266
  • Rarity: Legendary - 39 / 234 (that’s actually tad disappointing) Epic - 118 / 263 Rare - 171x2, and 4x1 / 175 (missing only 4 copies) Common - 207x2 and 7x1 / 214 (weirdly enough missing more copies of common than rare) Note - I have 31 extra cards, not included above, where the game makes you keep cards above 2 (standard and premium from base set)
  • Premium cards - 148, 14 from transmuting
Not sure what else to measure, hope it’s any interesting for anyone. For me it surely makes the point, that Gwent is a very generous game. I think you can actually get some very good decks without paying any money. Some money though is definitely what CDPR deserves.
By far I had the most fun from playing an Elven deck with Deadeye Precision. My Deck
So much fun to play - it has cards for dealing with a lot of other cards, nice boosts, and packs a juicy combo punch of millions of Deadeyes shooting at your enemy. Problem’s appear though with reliability - the conditions to pull it out not always appear, and sometimes you do miss the right cards when dealt a bad hand. Sadly, when confronted with some copy / paste decks in Pro, I don’t get to win as often as in previous ranks, but I assume the decks I’m more often losing to, that always look the same, are the current meta.
Speaking of which - I think it’s true what people say that so many decks look the same now. In the end of the day you can’t stop people from playing the way they want to. If it’s more fun for them to find one meta online, craft it and play until the end of days, rather than experiment, there’s nothing I can do about it. What is however funny to watch is people who play those decks and don’t know how - I guess you can craft the cards, but you cannot craft the skills and being able to calculate ;) I guess the most annoying for me right now is the Detlaff + Hunger combo - it’s just so simple and brutal. Play Detlaff and consume him twice, boom, 19 points... No preparation, no buildup... Well, if you consider Frightener - Dormant a preparation, I guess you have one step of prep, worth additional 12 points... At least the Shield Wall and NG Assimilate or deck depletion require some more finesse, or luck, or process, and it’s an actual pleasure to observe and disrupt. Whenever I see the Hunger decks, I’m losing the will to play.
So, this is it, the end of my book. Doubt anyone made I that far. Time now for questions and next steps planning. If anyone is still reading, can you please let me know what you’d do?
For sure I’m going shopping, with 15k of ore that’s going to be a lot of kegs. The question is, what kegs to buy? Especially with the addition of neutral kegs, and my collection missing a lot of neutral, should I buy 50 neutral, then say 20 of each faction? I have by now between 70 and 80% of cards for each faction, and only 58% of neutral. Or just stick to the ultimate kegs? Are any extension kegs still worth it, assuming I have now on average 75-80% cards from them? Is buying and playing Novigrad fun? I have been rather skipping them so far? And should I save any for the upcoming expansion? Presumably I’ll get enough ore in the new journey, to craft them anyway, but have anyone of you been saving resources before, and did it pay off?
Next thing to do will be crafting some cards, I already have a few good ideas, but maybe it’s time to switch from home brew to just crafting a meta from online suggestions? If you look at the top players these days, do you think they have built their own decks from good knowledge of cards, and it’s the skills that gets them so far, or do they just copy decks and tactics from each other, and luck determines who wins? Is there any chance for a fresh noob like me to ever compete in the Gwent Open? Should I save some scraps for next update, when balance changes?
Lastly, those of you who can call themselves seasoned players - what draws you still to Gwent? What am I still possibly missing after a month, that I can look forward to?
Thank you, and see you on the battlefield.
