So, given the mayhem about Steam and whatnot, I think we should talk about free software games.

Why free software games, and what does it have to do with Steam?

Much, actually. Free software games, for those not in the know, are games built as free software (duh!), which means that they can be played for free, and most importantly, modified and improved for free! No need to wait for the developer to fix the bug when you can fix it yourself, no need to jump through hoops to bypass a DRM or decrypt an obscure format in order to modify the game - the source code is on the clear, and everyone can touch it as one sees fit.

Still, what does it have to do with Steam? Many games do allow for mods already.

Sure, many games, both free and commercial, in Steam, Origin, Uplay or elsewhere, are able to be modified, but most of these modifications are, in fact, illegal. Furthermore, even when modifications are allowed by the publisher, it imposes several restrictions that may be unacceptable by the modding community. Free software games don't have a publisher restricting the usage or modification, so basically everything is valid (as long as the community gets the modifications too).

Fine, maybe it has to do something with Steam, but why are you insisting on this "free software thing"?

Because free software games are the only ones that anyone can actually own nowadays. While we may like the convenient downloads and achievement systems and multiplayer utilities of Steam and Origin and Uplay and whatnot, we often ignore that in said system, games are "licensed, not sold" - if for whatever reason the publisher or distributor deems your account unfit to stay subscribed to the service, they have the legal right to strip you from playing your games and losing all your progress, and furthermore, without returning your money. And if the company goes broke, the same will happen, even if you have done nothing to break the contract. In that sense, we're not different to console players. Even physical media games, which are getting scarce on consoles and even more on PC, often require to bind the copy to a given account.

And what about freeware and abandonware? Those can be modified and copied with no problem.

Yes, you can, but remember that those free games still have authors, and not all those authors are willing to have their games modified or played outside of their terms. Free software games are the only safe bet for modders, since the permission to modify already comes as part of the package.

Alright, you've been talking about free software games this and that, but which ones are you talking about?

Ah, that's the question I wanted to hear, so let me start with my big list of good free software games that deserve more love:

First-person shooters

  • Red Eclipse: An FPS with a twist, where players are able to run across walls, bounce and even hover for brief amounts of time. It's like Halo meets parkour, and it's frantic.
  • Xonotic: A more traditional FPS, more similar to Quake, with updated graphics and solid single-player and multiplayer modes. Based on another FPS called Nexuiz, which eventually was sold out by its former developers and ported to the PS3; a new team took the last free software version, renamed it and expanded it even more. See why free software games are important?
  • OpenArena: Did you know that Id Software, creator of Quake 3 Arena, regularly releases its old games as free software? But there's a catch, since the assets (music, textures, models, etc.) are still property of Id. So, the day after Id released the code for Quake 3 Arena, a team of developers started to create alternate assets, gave it a new name, and turned it into a standalone game.
  • FreeDOOM: Same deal, only with Id's original Doom. The progress with replacing the assets is far lower than with OpenArena though, so expect incomplete levels and whatnot. If you do have time and want to finish it, though, go on (just be sure that it's all original content, they've had problems with that once and a lot of music had to be removed).

Overhead shooters

  • Kobo Deluxe: Based on the original Kobo, it's a relatively simple shooter where you can move a spaceship in eight directions, shooting both back and forth in a looping space, and the levels finish when you destroy all the enemy cores. Nonetheless it's frantic and fun.
  • Anything by ABA Games: Well, ABA Games is more accurately a single person, the Japanese developer Kenta Cho, who has released a plethora of "bullet hell" games such as Noiz2SA, Titanion, rRootage and Tumiki Fighters. The last one, a shooter where the ship can absorb blocks that the enemies leave behind and use them as its own defense, was even ported to the Wii.

Rhythm games

  • StepMania: A clone of Dance Dance Revolution that eventually covered other rhythm games, such as Pump It Up and Para Para Paradise. Unlike these others, though, this game allows the user to use custom songs specifically charted for StepMania, called "simfiles", which can be obtained from a broad variety of places online. StepMania was even used as the engine for other rhythm games, such as In The Groove.
  • Frets on Fire: A clone of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, which much like StepMania, allows the users to play custom songs as well. A fork called Frets on Fire X, or FoFiX, also includes support for bass, drums, and vocals, up to four players, and better emulation of the Guitar Hero's whammy bar.

Platformers

  • Super Tux: Replace Mario with Tux, the mascot of the Linux kernel, and the lush greens of the Mushroom Kingdom with the Antarctic wilderness, and you'll have Super Tux. Tux's pink girlfriend, Penny has been kidnapped by the evil reptile Nolok, and now Tux must travel all across the North Pole (and beyond) to save her. Not much story to start with, but most platformers aren't deep in story either.

Racing games

  • Super Tux Kart: If Super Tux is the free version of Super Mario, Super Tux Kart is the free version of Mario Kart (what else?) - except this time Tux brings many mascots of free and open-source programs and assorted free cultural works to the racing track. While they may not sound familiar to most, Linux users are familiar with the mascots of GIMP, Mozilla, Pidgin, GNU, Adium, eMule, and even BSD that are represented in this game. Furthermore, it includes a repository where users can upload custom characters and tracks.
  • TORCS: The Open Racing Car Simulator is, as its name implies, a game where you can race against several vehicles. But its engine is based on a thriving community of artificial intelligence investigators, which had been using the core of this program to put virtual vehicles to the test long before the single-player graphic mode had been programmed. That is to say, you'll be racing not against yet another computer driver, but against the result of over a decade of scholar investigation. If you prefer something more user-oriented, Speed Dreams (formerly TORCS-NG) is what you're searching for. Good luck!
  • Tile Racer: This one is less oriented towards accurate simulation, and more towards wild tracks and stunts that defy physics. It also allows users to create custom tracks using prebuilt pieces (hence the "tile" in the title).

RPGs, both Western and Eastern

  • FLARE: The Free/Libre Action Roleplaying Engine aims to create an isometric action RPG, much like Diablo or Baldur's Gate. So far, they have a broad variety of characters and levels.
  • Valyria Tear: Although it's still in development (and it's based on another game that's still incomplete after almost ten years), Valyria Tear has released a first chapter that showcases what both projects aimed for: creating a free, open-source Eastern-styled RPG. And it's a really nice first chapter, well polished and with an interesting take on its turn-based system.

Strategy

  • 0 A.D.: What began as a mod for Age of Empires, that would cover civilizations from the first century of the common era, quickly outgrew its original engine and moved to one built by the original developers. Although it's still a work in progress, what has been achieved is impressive: eight civilizations, all with historically accurate units and buildings, plus a fine artwork and developed AI to match.
  • The Battle for Wesnoth: This one is more oriented to the fans of grid-based strategy games, such as Fire Emblem, though with a twist. Here the grid is hexagonal, which broadens the strategies that both player and foe can take on the battlefield. The core game comes with a hefty amount of official missions and accompanying lore, and the artwork it has gained during the years is nothing but superb.
  • Spring RTS Engine: An engine for real-time strategy games based on Atari's Total Annihilation engine. The community have created several games based on the remade engine, the most important of them being Zero-K and Evolution.
  • Glest: This one is an RTS that handles more like the Warcraft or Age of Empires series of games, with units requiring to obtain resources to build structures and train more units, which then strike the opposing team. The original game has ceased development, but several forks have appeared to continue adding features and factions, the most important of which is the MegaGlest project. Originally only two factions were available, one based on magic and the other in technology, but the forks have added more real-life-based factions such as Egyptians and Romans.
  • Hedgewars: If you take the wackiness of Worms and replace the titular creatures with hedgehogs, this is what you'll get. Each turn, one of the factions is given a time-limited control of one of their w...hedgehogs, and a limited array of weapons to use. The goal is to cause as many enemy casualties as possible, while ensuring that your character is not left in a dangerous place for the enemy to take down the next turn.

Roguelikes

  • NetHack: A classic in its genre, NetHack is one of the most popular roguelike games, and one of the deepest ones in lore and strategy. Beginning as a text-only game for the command line, several graphical interfaces have appeared for it, including Vulture.

Card games

  • PokerTH: If you were searching for a way to play a good game of Texas Hold'em without spending a dime, PokerTH is the way to go. With a thriving online community and a nice offline mode, plus a vast array of variants of poker to play, PokerTH offers something for everyone who loves card games.
  • Wagic: The Homebrew: Judging by the name, it's no secret that Wagic is an independent alternative to Magic: The Gathering, but it has two important differences. First, its first target platform was the Playstation Portable, hence the "homebrew" in its name; and second, anyone can create a custom deck for the game, making Wagic potentially limitless in its update potential.

MMORPGs

  • The Saga of Ryzom: Another game that began as a commercial game, it was eventually released as free software. The official servers are still up and running with a freemium model: free accounts are limited to level 50, though reaching that level will take rather long. Well, not "level" as much as "levels", since you can grind four different abilities. Fighting and magic are the combat-oriented ones, but if you prefer to do something more pacific, you can prefer to focus on gathering and crafting, so you can create items that you can sell to other characters. Interesting!

Simulation

  • FlightGear: One of the most mature flying simulators, dating all the way back to 1997. It's held in such a high regard, that several sanctioned flight simulators use FlightGear as its engine.

Puzzle

  • 2048: The game that outdid Threes in the world of casual puzzle gaming, 2048 is a simple grid-based game where the player is randomly given tiles with multiples of 2, and they must be joined (and summed) to form the number 2048 before the grid is filled. All sorts of remixes have appeared, replacing the numbers with a broad variety of related pictures that must be matched in a similar fashion.
  • Frozen Bubble: Like Puzzle Bobble except with a purple-ish Tux, this game keeps the same premise of shooting colored bubbles to a constantly-falling array of other bubbles. If three or more are matched, the block falls away, and if you're precise enough, other blocks can fall along with the one you were aiming to.
  • GNU Chess and GNU Go: Two engines for two popular board games. With the right frontend, they can be played against in a single-player mode, or online against human opponents.

Assorted

  • Neverball: Remember Super Monkey Ball? This is basically the same game, sans the monkeys. It also adds a nice golf-like mode called Neverputt.
  • Scorched 3D: A reimaginated remake of an old DOS game called Scorched Earth, now on fantastic 3D! Take your tank to a set of islands, and aim towards other tanks (and the islands!) until only one stands.
I might have missed a few games, but the 15000-character limit of Reddit made me choose carefully what to put in my list. Hopefully you can find something you like in the list!

Mein balancing attempt (Big Block of Text)

Wargame Balancing By: Yulevia
WARNING!!! Big Block of Text Ahead!!!
<<<<<< If TL;DR Just Scroll down to a note with the same line separator as this line>>>>>>>
PS. This is just a draft not meant to be easy to read and prolly isn't good for your eyes, will make an organized spreadsheet version if well received.
PS2. Infantry and Artillery are not yet in
PS3. please give your comments and criticisms.
Foreword:
Before we proceed to list out what needs to be balanced, I believe it needs to be discussed, what is balance? how should balancing be like? what actually
damages balance? and ofcourse how wargame had fared so far with this. Do understand in any game this issue is very sensitive especially when there is flavor
to consider(very much some really balanced game like Supreme Commander lacks the flavor plainly because, everything is pretty much a reskin of each other,
well aside from the fact that Real Life Objects adds alot of flavor by themselves due to history and Nationalism). Well let's start with what is not
balancing and what is balancing.
Balancing is the act of comparing symmetrically the objects of the same role, usually in the case of wargame with modifiers such as, a certain faction might
have meant to have less capability in a certain field however can overcome in another while making the unit still quite usable or even important in the big
picture of it. It does not simply mean to make underused units be made to attract more used or an abused unit to be hit by a nerf bat. Or if a certain unit
is annoying to you, in fact, if its annoying for you and you are its enemy, its doing its job pretty well as all units are meant to pose nuisance to their enemies!
Below are examples of what balancing is not: 1. Reducing Smerch/Mars/Buratino because they are being spammed so much and are a nuisanse because they make the entire force disoriented and some might be killed.
  1. Putting F>14 in the planes tab because soviets have Su>31M in theirs.
  2. Nerf Reconnaisance because they are too effective in combat
  3. Adding S>300 because Patriots exist
  4. Nerf any cost effective units because they are the only things ever used.
What the above has in common as mistake: It leads to min>maxing, and generating a new set of units that would be used and inevittably unbalance of certain Nations against another.
the performance on various attributes should make a big difference amongst things with the same type and role, however they need to somewhat be within
marginal power symmetrically to not make a certain side overpowered compared to the other(a good example here is that French tanks can have good fire power
and British tanks can into great armor, both of them achieve the purpose of tanks that is to spearhead the ground operations however both do it in a
different approach, ofcourse, Eugen has already built the principle on this for ages however as anyone can probably notice, the meta on it was too heavily
in favor of the offensively capable one over the one with a huge armor)
Big Picture and End Goal? We get alot of flavorful factions that have ample of various builds of strategies available to each while making them all viable
in the big picture for different purposes, Wargame does really well in this but there are still plenty of readjustment that can be seen as necessary. Of
course to make sure each faction has their flavor, you need to decide first, what are each faction's army known for, what should they be good at given that,
well Eugen has given us a huge armory to work on and there is more than enough toys to fiddle around.
Below are mere personal impressions of each Nation and Coalition in their supposed flavor, and what specialization were their armory built to tend on(most
of which are not far from what they already are).
Generally, You will find many blue slightly more expensive than the red side but they are also going to do their job slightly better to middle out the cost
effectiveness, do note we want to make the middle tiers as the main units in battle, some of the minor nations will not be expensive at all however as their
equipments are quite dated, though I'm also against making spam an option and will take care to not trip that wire.
For all intents and purpose, each note on each unit will cater towards its national affiliation over its coalition, I intend to tax coalition to make the
battlefield leveled, by introducing artificial uncomplementary issues or making units of the same coalition redundant to each other or by cluttering the
members strengths in a few select tabs that makes it very expensive for a Coalition, this way Coalitions should not become so much more powerful than each nation on their own.(inevitably however I'm quite sure coalitions will still be slightly more powerful due to the mere fact, they are getting the best from their members, I wish Wargame removes this concept in Wargame 4, its not beautiful at all.).
The goals in the set of balancing is to bring the battle to the middle tier like the olden times, this balance wishes to throw the current meta of top tier units and make them only a support to the middle tier which will be doing everything. The current issue seems more that the cost efficiency lies on the blingy things instead of what you are supposed to be churning out en mass, and no the balance do not wish for spam battles as well. I believe bringing the battle to make the Middle tiers the kings of combat also would make the curreny meta of using Coalitions, Super Powers and Unspecs more or less thrown out of the window, which will encourage a wider flavor to the game.
In terms of planes, they are special, I think in this particular balancing post I'll make Planes favor the higher priced ones, due to the reason that planes in itself is an extremely expensive investment, I believe with that amount of investment you should be getting the best out of the resources. This is also to encourage the use of Radars and other high accuracy Anti Air.Navy will not be touched in this discussion, for most part they are a meh addition and do not matter in most of the battles unless you play too much in Strait, which I arguably give the title of "Worst Map of Wargame:Red Dragon".
<<<<<< Start Here if you went TL;DR on the above, most are just me ranting anyways...>>>>>>>
