Podcast suggestion: Interview Prof Rachel Lance about her book on the submarine H.L. Hunley
Even though I've already heard her interviewed, and I know she's done a YouTube video about it (here), I think she would make a great NDQ guest. She and Matt and Destin would have a lot to talk about that other shows would not bring out. Consider this:
- Her career is in many ways parallel to Destin's. She is a civilian scientist who worked for the U.S. Navy for some years before deciding to get a PhD. She's a biomedical engineer studying the effects of pressure, including explosions, on the human body.
- As well as having a strong science and engineering background, for her book she has spent a lot of time going through archives and documents and trying to tell the human story of the H.L. Hunley, so she would be able to talk about historical context with Matt as well.
- The H.L. Hunley would itself be a perfect NDQ subject, akin to Seige Warfare or the Red Baron, and a timely one, because,
- It's a submarine! And Destin has his YouTube submarine series in progress.
- On the other hand, it's an early submarine, relatively simple compared to the nuclear one Destin was on. Its technicalities should be easier to explain in a podcast medium. A Rachel / Destin discussion on NDQ might be a good primer for the SED nuclear submarine videos.
- It's about historical warfare tactics - I think it could lead to an interesting discussion about the nature of blockades, and how military engineers come up with radical solutions to specific problems.
- Dr Lance seems to be more than happy to talk about the broader context of the Civil War, what she's learned about the Confederate submarines in general, and how this story relates to slavery and race issues. That might be something NDQ would be willing to get into at this time. To follow on from episode 085 - how does Destin feel, as a Southern man who doesn't agree with racism, about the way the Civil War is remembered? Maybe not something you'd want to get into, especially as a panel of 3 white people - but the opportunity is there.
- The story of how she did her PhD research is pretty interesting in itself. She made a scale model and subjected it to underwater explosions in a pond. It's real SED stuff! And a lot of it relied on kindness and cooperation and enthusiasm from strangers, which seems like it's on topic for NDQ.
- She's also working on a paper on 'how people communicate on the internet' - a recurring theme of NDQ as well.
I could go on. Suffice to say, although I knew nothing about her until yesterday, she seems like a cool all-round science and history person who'd be an excellent NDQ guest and this would make for an episode that would be enjoyed by all 4 chairs. And she has a book to promote, so hopefully she would be interested in appearing too.
