So I'm playing through the entire series for the first time: Game one and the Ezio trilogy

On March 20th, facing down a quarantine and the prospect of spending upwards of 80-90 hours a week at my station (I'm a FirefighteEMT), I purchased the entire Assassin's Creed series on Steam (all non-mobile games, that is). Everything from 2007's Assassin's Creed to 2018's Odyssey, all the gold editions, everything. Having never spent a minute playing an Assassin's Creed game, this is probably the weirdest purchase decision I've ever made. So far, I don't regret it. Here are my thoughts on Games 1-4.
Attached to each little blurb I've added my much longer reviews on a dumb blogspot I set up just so I could rant to myself about games, movies, and literature. I like to write, and I like to look back at my thoughts on things later, so I thought I'd start posting it somewhere. Feel free to click on those links, feel free not to, just thought I'd provide my broader, more detailed thoughts for anyone who's interested. I feel like my ability to format my thoughts gets a bit better as time goes on, so my Brotherhood and Revelations posts are a lot more detailed and thoughtful.
Spoilers for 10 year old games here folks, be warned.
Assassin's Creed - An Acquired Taste
Assassin's Creed (2007) left me conflicted. The art direction and open world were impressive even today, the core gameplay loop was fun if more than a little repetitive, and the modern day story was intriguing but often left me feeling empty and confused. The side missions didn't feel worth completing, the Kingdom felt like a half-abandoned feature, and I'm not really into collectibles so that wasn't a point of interest for me. While I enjoyed clambering around and combat the viewpoints and save-citizen missions felt more like mindnumbing "check this off" objectives than anything particularly interesting (some of the unique viewpoints were really cool, to be clear, but it felt like there were more of them than necessary and most of them were the same basic minaret or tower model). Overall there was enough here to keep me interested through my 17 hour playthrough and make me want to continue the series, but I probably wouldn't play the game again.
Assassin's Creed 2 - A Masterclass in Murder
Assassin's Creed 2 (2009), by contrast, left me impressed and ready for more. Ezio is a masterful character who feels much more real and well written than Altair (virtually the only thing I knew about the Assassin's Creed series before picking it up was what Ezio looked like), the cities of Florence and Venice still look beautiful today and seemed much more interesting than anything the first game offered, the side missions actually felt creative, although there was still some repetition, and the main sequence missions seemed to move along with much more clarity of purpose. The story was cinematic and demanded growth in its character, and side characters were fully fleshed out and likable in their own right. The gameplay was far smoother, the assassinations more satisfying, and the parkour more responsive, as displayed in the amazing Assassin's tomb missions. This game improved on the original in nearly every respect. And while the more subdued soundtrack of its predecessor was interesting, the soundtrack of this game blew me away. No wonder "Ezio's family" was such an instant classic, the song puts me right in my feels every time I hear it. Assassin's Creed 2's soundtrack probably does more for its reputation than a lot of people would consciously admit. The modern day seems to take more of a backseat here. Maybe that's not such a bad thing? After 37 hours, I was ready to just go right back to Sequence 1 and start all over again.
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood - When in Rome
Dumb title for this one, I know. As I understand it, Brotherhood is right up there with 2 as a lot of people's favorite Assassin's Creed. I'll be honest, I don't really get it. To be clear, it's a good game. Ezio gets some more characterization, as does the supporting cast, but none of it feels particularly brilliant. I felt the scope of the Templar conspiracy was much reduced from two, basically resolving down to a few of the Pope's family members, which was fine but a bit disappointing next to the tour of Renaissance Italy and its major players in 2. The main story of this game just feels constrained. Rome was cool but I don't think it was even as interesting as Florence or Venice from 2 (it does feel steeped in history though, which was nice). The Borgia towers were annoying and the economic system tacked on. The Assassins recruits were a nice new feature, but it felt like a skeletal version of what it could be. One thing I'll give this game is the side missions were meaty and directly related to the main goal of defeating the Borgia, and the Romulus lairs were awesome. I also have to call out the Cristina missions, which were heartwrenching and the best writing in the series hands-down. You actually get some real missions as Desmond this time, and I thought that was really cool. So the game certainly isn't bad, but honestly after 31 hours I probably wouldn't return to it.
Assassin's Creed: Revelations - End of an Era
In again what I think is somewhat a subversion of the consensus, this is my favorite game in the series so far. The writing is phenomenal, I love this version of Ezio, Constantinople is my favorite city of any showcased in the city so far, the small supporting cast is excellent, and the way it interweaves the stories of Altair, Ezio, and Desmond across centuries and continents is masterful. Desmond gets some real characterization, the gameplay is even more fluid than previous entries, and the story is focused but still feels significant. The way the assassin recruits system is implemented here is a lot more personal than in Brotherhood, and improved because of it. You really feel like a mentor here, which I liked. It elegantly concludes the stories of Altair and Ezio, and sets up Desmond for his final act as well. One criticism, the Templar dens were an even worse mechanic than the Borgia towers in Brotherhood, and the economic system even less significant. Nevertheless, coming in at just 23 hours I'd play this game again in a heartbeat. I imagine I'll be going back to this and 2 after I finish the series, but we'll see.
I love this series so far, and I'm kind of disappointed in myself for never picking it up in the past. The gameplay is fun and different from most games I've played, the locations impressive and worlds fantastically realized, and I've never played a series of games that respected history so thoroughly. The modern day story is an interesting way to frame the hopping through time, and Ezio is just a phenomenal character. I'm excited to continue onto the rest of the series, and get into some of the more controversial games. Sorry for the somewhat long-winded post, thanks for reading this far! Hopefully I'll be done with the series by the time Valhalla rolls around.
