How I, as an Office 365 enthusiast, managed to do the switch
That being said, I've been getting more and more tired of Windows and the issues that come with it, and I love a lean experience. My desktop rig, which nowadays is only used for gaming and watching YouTube, runs Windows still. Some games or tools for them don't have the appropriate support yet. KVM and VFIO are an awesome solution and I had that set up for quite a while, but my board doesn't allow 2 PCIe GPUs when an NVMe drive is installed and my CPU doesn't have an iGPU, but I digress.
Anyway, most of the time I use my laptop. My laptop doesn't need to game. I had Windows on it for quite a while actually, and honestly it's been a pretty annoying experience. From BitLocker throwing a hissy fit whenever I update the BIOS, to the general system sluggishness and the atrocious battery life. Mind you, I know Windows pretty well. I deal with it on a daily basis on the job and there are really the weirdest issues.
My laptop, a ThinkPad T420, has phenomenal Linux support. So, I want to show you my setup and how exactly it became perfect for me, despite relying on Office for daily use (and it really has to be Office. Thanks for any recommendations but I'm not switching for a plethora of reasons).
As you've already read, I'm running a Lenovo ThinkPad T420. These are the specs and upgrades I have done to it:
- Intel Core i5-2450M (2C/4T)
- 8 GB DDR3-1333 (upgraded from 4 GB)
- 256 GB Intenso SSD
- 750 GB WD HDD in UltraBay slot
- 9-cell battery
- HD+ display upgrade
Software wise, I'm running my favorite distribution - Debian. Small, lean, stable. Exactly what I want. The only issue I had was a very low speaker volume. That was fixed quickly with snd_hda_intel.power_save=0 as a kernel commandline parameter. On Linux, I noticed my webcam quality increasing slightly, and, more importantly, my microphone works again. Yeah. It worked in Windows until I changed the screen to the higher resolution one. After that, it was just crackles and pops. I assumed I had ripped a cable or something and wrote it off, and used a USB headset when I had to join a video conference (thanks, pandemic!). But upon installing Debian and testing it OOC, it works perfectly fine and produces clear sound.
Of course, it is just as fast if not faster than Windows, and is really fun to use with this phenomenal keyboard. For my desktop environment, I am a little lazy and use MATE. The first screen is the main screen, often used for webbrowsing (Google Chrome heathen here), or writing things in vim, my preferred editor. On the second screen, most of the time neomutt resides for e-mail. My mail server for some reason doesn't like neomutt, so I'm sending mail using msmtp. Music is dealt with by spotifyd and spotify-tui. For a spotlight-like search, Kupfer is a superb and extensible application launcher. I'm an avid photographer and use Darktable for raw development, aswell as Krita for small image edits. When I have to write an essay for university, I like a distraction-free vim experience.
But dinosaur_elephant, what about the Office thing you even mentioned in the title? Great question, glad you asked. At first, I thought I could do without the desktop apps, so I installed ice from PeppermintOS and created shortcuts for all the Office web apps. But they really are not great. So, what I did was set up a VM with KVM/QEMU. 4 Cores, 4 GB RAM, 60 GB qcow2 on the SSD and Windows 10 Pro installed. I debloated the install, installed Office and logged into OneDrive, and tried my best to permanently disable Windows Update as best as I could. So far, it works neatly. I write my essays in vim, paste them into Office and do the formatting according to university spec. Then, I export a PDF to OneDrive and do the final touch-up on Linux. So I never have to virtually run Windows for longer than 30 minutes. Also, I don't need to deal with shutting down and booting it back up, since I can just "save" the domain in virt-manager and resume when I need it. Saves a lot of time. OneDrive sync was a thing though. I used onedrive (the package name) and logged into that. I symlinked ~/OneDrive to /mnt/data/onedrive to store everything on the HDD. I have around 200 GB of stuff on there, from backups to my university documents. The first time I executed onedrive --synchronize --verbose --download-only, even when connected via ethernet on a 100 MBit connection, it took around a full day to sync my whole library. Setting the daemon up was also kind of a pain. The daemon runs, at least if you ask systemd, but asking the onedrive programm for sync status more often than not still yields a directory out of sync. Waiting seems to solve it, sometimes. Still thinking about either switching cloud providers or just syncing manually when I need it, but switching would suck because I'd lose Office autosave and versioning. Also, I still do a lot of writing on my rig, and don't really want to burn money on the Office subscription when I don't use their cloud storage.
Other misc stuff is that I have it encrypted with LUKS and set up fprintd to make use of my fingerprint scanner for sudo auth. I haven't yet managed to persuade lightdm to use the fingerprint reader without it breaking anything, so that's a to do. Battery life has gotten way better with acpid and powertop. Bluetooth works flawlessly.
- Set up fprintd for login
- Encrypt HDD and set up auto decrypt via key file (upon entering the password on boot)
You can totally do the switch if you want to ditch Windows but need Office. Outlook isn't working on Linux, but Outlook isn't exactly a great mail client anyway. Sure, I need to run a VM every once in a while, but other than that? Not a lot of things I would need Windows for. Video editing? Kdenlive. Desktop recording? OBS runs on Linux. Video conferencing Skype and the abomination Zoom is run on Linux.
