In a night of exceptional goalkeeping, Ceará and Cruzeiro end in a stalemate.
Vozão went back home after a sore defeat to CSA, which added to the club’s 6-match long winless streak. While Raposa traveled away to Ceará after another defeat in their previous Brasileirão outing, this time against leaders Flamengo. On their game for the league’s 2nd round, Cruzeiro managed to win by 1x0, putting a break to Ceará’s momentum after the 1st round. Both the hosts and the visitors fielded a number of their best players, despite the away team’s new manager experiments with the squad. The first 45 minutes were filled with action, the two teams managed to create meaningful chances on both ends. A noteworthy occurrence was Cruzeiro striker Pedro Rocha’s injury, forcing an early substitution for the visitors. The second half went in the same direction as the first, despite the teams showing capability to create chances left and right, the lack of end product and/or performance from the goalies helped to keep the tie scoreless. So in summary, the stars of this game were the keepers, Fábio for Raposa and Diogo Silva for Vozão. Another turmoil in the cruzeirense backstage was reported by the media, once again involving attacking midfielder Thiago Neves. After the match, a discussion sparkled in the team’s locker room about the manager’s refusal to field the experienced footballer, this debacle spiraled into the manager’s sacking by the board. Just regular Brazilian footie stuff. Things in the cearense end don’t look as dire, but the club’s current form is certainly a recurring topic. You know... Elephant in the room, etc, etc.
This draw helps neither club, leaving Ceará still in the middle of their downward spiral and making Cruzeiro drop key points on their fight against the Z4. Vozão is edging closer and closer to the relegation spots, now being only a couple of points away from there. Well, Raposa is in an awkward position. The club certainly has the man power to overcome this situation, however as the rounds keep passing things aren’t looking brighter...
São Paulo 0x1 Goiás15’: Leandro Barcia (GOI).

A lackluster São Paulo slips at home against a lethal Goiás.
The hosts got a victory in their last Brasileirão match, a late winner saw them get the 3 points against Botafogo. While the visitors had a blast playing against Fluminense last time out, cruising past their opponents and building morale within the squad. On their previous clash, São Paulo bested Goiás by 2x1. Despite the awkward situation in Soberano’s medical department, the team could field a number of their starters for the game, in the same vein as Goiás was able to. The match’s only goal came early, putting the away team in the front seat for the remaining 75 minutes of play. Even though the home owners had a large stretch of the first half to equalize, nothing of substance came of it. Some of their key players wasted their opportunities to score, making the Esmeraldino lead last till the break. A change of mentality could be seen in the tricolores Paulista during the start of the second half, creating a couple of dangerous shots. The real highlight from the last 45 minutes was a wasted penalty by the hosts. The referee made the call in what could be considered a soft pen, however, alviverde goalkeeper Tadeu made sure to prevent his side losing their advantage and parried the shot. Nothing worthy of note came after this occurrence, showing the lack of creativity and morale amidst the São Paulo team. A day after the match, the club announced manager Cuca rescision. Only a couple hours later, in surprising fashion Fernando Diniz was announced as the new manager of the team for the foreseeable future. Well, Goiás didn’t have anything to do with it and left the Morumbi worry less and happy with their 3 points.
The paulistas remain on 35 points and start to see Grêmio and Bahia on their rear mirror, the club holds the last spot for the Libertadores at the moment. We’ll see how their new manager shocks things up and shows capability to better the side. While the goianos start to distance themselves from the relegation zone once again, amplifying their points advantage to 8 now.

Flamengo enjoy their 2-man advantage and win against Internacional.
Both teams won their respective last Brasileirão outings, Mengão against Cruzeiro and Inter against Chapecoense. However in their last Campeonato Brasileiro encounter, Internacional defeated Flamengo by 2x1, this loss originated one of the year’s most infamous quotes. The two sides put forward their best players available for yet another match between them this season. The Cariocas played in their common offensive playstyle, which appears to get even more strong when playing in the Maracanã. This meant that the gaúchos would follow suit and use their standard way of play, sit at the back and strike on the counter. However, things didn’t work out simple as that for them. In about 20 minutes of game, Colorado not only fell behind in the scoresheet but also had a man sent off. The hosts continued to press regardless, making the 10-man Inter drop further back. To aid Fla’s situation, another red card was shown for the visitors just before half time. After a coming together by their center-back Rodrigo Caio and opposition striker Paolo Guerrero, the adversary player had some harsh words for the referee and ended up being sent off. At least he made sure everyone knew what he thought about it. A heroic comeback was being drawn after Inter managed to level the score. But as the game continued, the Cariocas made sure to smash every piece of hope coming from the gaúcho side. The away team’s manager Odair Hellmann had some strong words about the refereeing and the VAR throughout the match, which is kinda becoming a tagline for this Brasileirão season, right?
The flamenguistas keep on keeping on, now on the brink of breaking another record number of wins in a row. The club is in pole position and the 3-points distance between them from the runners-up feels greater than the quantity itself. While the Colorados once again end up frustrated by the same side who knocked them out of the Copa Libertadores this season. To add insult to injury, the team can drop from 4th place and lose their direct qualification to the next Copa’s group stage.
Bahia 2x0 Botafogo23’: Artur (BAH); 63’: Élber (BAH).

Bahia leaves no room for interpretation and cruise past Botafogo.
The baianos faced an obstacle to their Libertadores aspirations, being defeated by Corinthians in the last round. While the Cariocas also lost their previous match for the Brasileirão, but to São Paulo. On the league’s 2nd round, Botafogo managed to clutch it out against Bahia and won 3x2. 4 months later and the starting XI by each side changed quite a bit, either due to technical options or transfer business. The match started kinda even but eventually displayed the clear difference between the teams. The visitors only dangerous chance came early on but was denied just above the goal line. From then on, the hosts reigned rampantly. After the first goal by the home team, a crucial occurrence would seal the match’s outlook. Yet another soft foul called by a Brazilian referee, but this time resulting in a straight red for left-back Gilson for shutting down a promising chance by Bahia. This incident killed Botafogo’s already weak game, giving way to an even more dominant performance by the hosts. After the break, it became even more obvious the disparity on the pitch. During the middle of the second half, the baianos plucked one more goal in to give enough stability to seal the match. After the red, the botafoguense squad didn’t create anything of substance, leaving Salvador with a tough pill to swallow.
Bahia remains on their hunt for a place in the next Copa Libertadores, diminishing their distance to a Pré-Libertadores spot to only a single point. If they manage to do it till the end of the league, it’ll sacrament their 4th ever participation in that competition (also a return after 30 years without playing it). The outlook for this remainder of championship isn’t as flashy for Botafogo. The club got sucked into a weird position at the middle of the table, where they’re currently the same points away from relegation and from continental spots.
Palmeiras 6x2 CSA6’: Luiz Adriano (PAL); 11’: Willian (PAL); 29’: Bruno Henrique (PAL); 45’+2: Gustavo Gómez (PAL); 52’: Apodi (CSA); 75’: Luiz Adriano (PAL); 83’: Bruno Henrique (PAL); 87’: Ricardo Bueno (CSA).
Palmeiras shows no remorse and thrashes CSA in São Paulo
Let's start with the Thursday goal-fest games with this one, that was a walk in the park for Verdão. Since Mano Menezes appointment, Palmeiras collected all 15 points disputed, and CSA - who is also in the rise after defeating Ceará last round to tie with the 1st team out of relegation spots - was the challenger on Pacaembu. Unfortunately for Alagoanos, recently bought Luis Adriano & Bruno Henrique didn't want to make the game fun, and at 30' mark, the game was already 3-0 for Verdão, with 2 assists from BH (this one in a chest pass was nasty) and a goal from LA. Palmeiras added one to the score later on the 1st half. Props to CSA to not drop the ball, as Apodi added one more screamer on his list of goals. With other 2 goals from the players highlighted, Palmeiras put 6 into Jordi's net - who even after conceding 6 had another performance to be praised. After a bad defensive header, Gustavo Gomez put Ricardo Bueno onside to score the final goal.
With 3 more points in the bag, Palmeiras keeps the title race on. They are now 3 points behind Flamengo, who will lose important players during the league games that will happen during FIFA dates, so it's important for Verdão to face all games like a final if they want to snap the 1st spot on the table. Of course, no one likes to get thrashed, but getting a point away was unlikely. But Argel Fucks's team is showing spirit to never let their head down, a good sign for fans! Playing at their field has been getting them important wins, and they can dream of leaving the Z4.
Grêmio 6x1 Avaí4’: Diego Tardelli (GRE); 13’: David Braz (GRE); 37’: Luan (GRE); 45’: Luciano (GRE); 63’: Bruno Cortez (GRE); 69’: André (GRE); 85’: Gegê (AVA).
With a great game from their offense, Grêmio plows through Avai
On a similar script from the game above, the home team dismantled the opponent from the relegation zone. I got to say, Gremio are is on a insane streak on the Brasileirão! Not only winning against good opponents but also with a good amount of goals. Avai left the last spot on the table last round after defeating Atlético-MG and is also showing spirit to leave the relegation zone, as 10 of their 16 points were conquered in the 5 matches prior to this. But Renato Gaucho's team showed no quarter to them, and as the other game of the night, at the end of the 1st half, it was already 4-0 for the home team. The 4th goal has to be highlighted, as it was a beautiful team play ending up on Luciano scoring. Apart from Everton Cebolinha, All the attacking players from Gremio scored that night. Cortez and André, after a great assist from Everton, closed the score for the home team. But Avai scored their consolation goal: this beautiful FK from Gegê. The 2017 King of America, Luan had a great night after being on the bench for a couple of weeks, with a goal and 2 assists. With the Libertadores semifinals against Flamengo in the upcoming weeks, its a good moment for this essential player to get back on form.
This great sequence from Grêmio puts them tied with Bahia on the edge of the Libertadores spots. The teams main objective this season is winning the Libertadores, but they have to keep close to the top6: even if they get to the finals, the title is only decided on 23/11, so the league cant be dropped. Now Avai cant let their heads down, as the fight to leave relegation is only starting, and they are 3 points, but 2 wins, behind the 1st team outside relegation zone.
Fluminense 1x1 Santos39’: Yeferson Soteldo (SAN); 45’+2: Lucas Veríssimo (FLU/OG).
In a game filled with drama, tension, 3 red cards and 2 golaços (one OG), Fluminense draws with Santos.
Oh boy, this was probably the best game on the league so far. But not because of the football displayed, but because of the amount of drama! I will try to cover everything that happened, so this will be a long summary. Coming to this game both clubs wanted to get back on track, as they got 3-0'ed last round, Flu to Goias away, and Santos to Gremio at home. Fluminense's coach Oswaldo de Oliveira, one of the old-school coaches from Brasil, never got the sympathy from fans, and even from the players, after the dismissal from Fernando Diniz. Getting rammed away by Goias put the cord on the neck of Oswaldo's spot, and this game was vital to him. And since we are talking about coaches, Jorge Sampaoli wasn't on the bench for Santos, as he was suspended last round. The 1st half was very dynamic, Santos was playing again with 3atb, with Derlis Gonzalez - a winger - as a wing-back, leaving lots of space for Tricolor's wingers, while Fluminense defensive fragileness was again explored. Santos could be 2-0 up before 15' if not for 2 amazing saves from Muriel. With lots of space to be explored by both sides, it was only a matter of time for a goal to be scored. Soteldo dribbled through 2 Flu's defenders and scored a beautiful goal on Maracanã. The atmosphere quickly turned heavy as Carioca fans got mad and started shouting against Oswaldo de Oliveira and the players with 5 minutes and added time to go on the 1st half. But the atmosphere got better before half-time, as Lucas Verissimo scored a beautiful goal... on the wrong net! Now the chants were in support of a comeback. That was it from the game scoring-wise.
Coming from the 2nd half, the game got spicier in the emotional side. At the 62' mark, Oswaldo subbed out fan-favorite Ganso to put Daniel. A strange sub, so the fans applauded Ganso and started shouting "Dumb! Dumb!" to the coach. And something that I never have seen before happened: Ganso and Oswaldo started to discuss on the sideline! The player shouted "[You're] Dumb as fuck!!", which Oswaldo responded to calling him a "Vagabond!" (translates closer to the sense of shameless, negligent, slack). If not for the assistants, this could have gotten uglier. Back to the game, both teams did subs to get the win, but no big treat was created. Until the 72', when VAR called the referee to see that Digão kicked Marinho's head during the challenge, getting the defender ejected and Frazan got subbed in the place of an attacker. I think that even worse than Digão's kick was the linesmen, that was in front of the play, giving the foul to Fluminense. Naturally, Santos started creating more, and Muriel had to do another great save to keep the draw. Flu got the chance to get the comeback in a counter by DM Allan, who got past the last defender and the keeper but didn't have the finesse to finish his great play. Santos had 2 great chances to score but wasted it, and Sampaoli reacted this way on his cabin. At this time Oswaldo clearly didn't want to do his job anymore, and Ganso and Nenê, the most experienced players on the squad, were giving instructions on the sideline. The fans behind the coach area were shouting and cursing at him and a reporter on the sideline reported during transmission that he responded "I'm so afraid of you guys", ironically, to them. And at the 90+3' mark, Frazan - the FB who was subbed in after Digão's red card - also got ejected after a last-man tackle on Marinho. 2 man down, Flu's striker João Pedro did all he could to hold the ball when he got it, and in the 2 times he received it, he got fouled by Marinho, who received a yellow card on each foul, getting ejected at 90+9'. After the game, there was turmoil on the way to dressing room between the refs and some Flu's players. And this photo of Oswaldo de Oliveira giving a middle finger to a fan on the stands will be the ending of this match summary. Needless to say, Oswaldo was fired early next morning. Thank you for reading this all!
With this point, Fluminense keeps his place outside the relegation only by the # of wins. Going through a coach change at this points is always hard, so the team will have to sweat even more on the field to keep Tricolor Carioca out of the Z4. Santos now sees themselves far away from the league leaders: 10 points from Flamengo, 7 from Palmeiras. They have to get back on winning if they want to keep their spot on G4, but also because in the 24th round they will have the direct matchup against Palmeiras at home.
Athletico Paranaense 4x1 Fortaleza9’: Wellington Paulista (FOR); 32’: Marco Ruben (CAP); 45’+3: Nikão (CAP); 60’: Léo Cittadini (CAP); 90’+3: Marcelo Cirino (CAP).
Athletico Paranaense recovers from an early PK goal and defeats Fortaleza in the reencounter with the fans after the 2019 Copa do Brasil Title
Last week, CAhP lifted the 2019 Copa do Brasil trophy in Beira-Rio. As their weekend game was away (ended up 1-1 against Vasco), this was the first home game after the title, and obviously, the trophy was present and the fans could cherish the title with their players. Fortaleza, on the other side, lost at home to Palmeiras and is starting to feel the relegation zone closer. With that danger in mind, they were fast to cut the Paranaenses celebration short. VAR warned the referee of a handball after a header from Wellington Paulista, who himself converted the PK and made the tempo of the game change. This isn't a show match, it's a league game! So CAhP put their head on the game and started showing their usual dominance at home. Rony was on fire this night, and assisted Marco Ruben, drawing the game. He also started the counter that ended up with Nikão scoring and putting the home team ahead of the score right before half-time. Coming back from the dressing room, the scenario didn't change. Apart from a great play by Romarinho, who dribbled past 5 CAhP players, Fortaleza failed to deliver any danger to the now Brasil's International GK Santos. CAhP, a well-coordinated team, was able to keep the pressure and work their way to Marcelo Boeck's net 2 more times in the last 45' of the game, with Léo Cittadini and Marcelo Cirino. The bad sequence saw Fortaleza's coach Zé Ricardo fired.
Already qualified for Copa Libertadores group stage because of the Copa do Brasil title and with a safe 30 points, CAhP is just chilling in the Nothing Zone and will be enjoying the league. Fortaleza, on the opposite side, is only 3 points ahead of the 3 teams behind them on the table, who are tied with 19 points. They still are 2 games away from getting in the relegation zone, as the 17th and 18th placed have 2 wins less than them. With Rogério Ceni lined up to come back - left Cruzeiro after 46 days - Foralza can dream of having a safe league.
First off, yesterday (26/09) morning, Cuca was fired from São Paulo, saying that his style didn't fit the club. Some sources say that he was actually trying to play Dani Alves as he plays on the NT, like RB, but he didn't want it. Anyways, we can't know for sure. Then, in the afternoon, Cruzeiro fired Rogério Ceni, as he was completed devoured by Cruzeiros players, like Thiago Neves and Dedé. Its easier to sack 1 guy - the manager - than multiple players. At night, São Paulo announced the signing of ex-Fluminense coach Fernando Diniz, and he's already training the team today. Early this morning (27/06), Fluminense and Fortaleza fired their coaches, Oswaldo de Oliveira and Zé Ricardo respectively. By the afternoon, Cruzeiro announced ex-Flamengo coach Abel Braga and Fortaleza has almost everything right to the return of Rogério Ceni. At the moment this was posted, Fluminense is the only one managerless right now. Sources say that Lisca and Zé Ricardo are the ones in negotiation for the spot after Cuca said he's taking a break till next season to take care of his heart problems.
